Eddie Howe addresses rumors surrounding Dan Ashworth’s departure from Newcastle, while also mentioning Callum Wilson’s surgery.

Newcastle United’s manager Eddie Howe has confessed his desire for a swift resolution to Dan Ashworth’s uncertain future amidst rumors linking him to Manchester United.

There have been widespread reports suggesting that the Red Devils are keen on securing the services of the Magpies’ sporting director to fill a similar role at Old Trafford.

Before his team’s upcoming match against his former club Bournemouth, Howe stated that there had been no formal communication between the two clubs. However, he expressed his eagerness for the speculation to cease, acknowledging that where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.

When asked about his preference for a speedy resolution, he responded, “Yes, but it’s not really about what I want, is it? I’m not calling the shots. I’m not the one in control of the situation.

“Obviously, it’s been all over the news lately, and typically, when these things make headlines, something is brewing. But as of now, we haven’t heard anything from anyone.

“At some point, there needs to be closure, and things need to progress. The club will always move forward. We have exceptional individuals in every department doing incredible work behind the scenes.

“The club has always been ambitious, and that hasn’t changed. I’m confident the club will thrive in the future.”

Howe also disclosed that he had conversed with Ashworth this week following the reports, but Ashworth hadn’t indicated a desire to remain at St. James’ Park. The 52-year-old already has a close relationship with Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, whose group is poised to finalize the purchase of a 25% stake in Manchester United next week.

Ashworth joined Newcastle from Brighton just 20 months ago after a period of gardening leave. Negotiations between the clubs are likely to hinge on the duration of his contract, should he opt for the role at Old Trafford.

There are concerns among Newcastle supporters that Ashworth might divulge information about the club’s long-term strategies. Howe admitted to sharing those concerns.

“I think your concerns are valid,” he said. “I’m not sure how much I can elaborate on that, but I share your sentiments.

“It’s obvious that we’re protective of what’s ours, whether it’s players or staff. If individuals eventually move on to other clubs, there’s a protocol to follow before it becomes a reality.”

In other news, Howe confirmed that Callum Wilson might be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a chest injury that required surgery.

“It’s quite a peculiar injury, a scuffle right at the end of the game,” he explained. “Initially, we thought it was his shoulder, but it turned out to be his pectoral muscle.

“He consulted with a specialist, and he’s currently undergoing surgery. It’s a significant setback, and my heart goes out to him. We’re hopeful he’ll return before the season’s end.”

Additionally, Howe will have to cope without Alexander Isak and Joe Willock against Bournemouth, as they are still working on regaining match fitness. Matt Targett, Elliott Anderson, Joelinton, and Nick Pope also remain sidelined.
