NEWCASTLE’s sponsor Sela is introducing groundbreaking hi-tech shirts that allow deaf fans to immerse themselves in the St James’ Park atmosphere. These innovative flashing tops will be available for supporters with hearing impairments during Saturday’s highly anticipated Premier League clash against Tottenham.
The shirts are haptic, meaning they react to electronically or mechanically generated movement. Fans wearing them can expect to feel a part of the St James’ Park atmosphere through real-time touch sensation. Newcastle’s front-of-shirt sponsor Sela is launching these tops specifically for deaf fans and those with hearing loss. The Magpies claim that such supporters will have the opportunity to “immerse themselves in the atmosphere of St. James’ Park for the very first time.”
Sela is generously donating their sponsorship from this weekend’s game to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), a charity that supports 12 million people in the UK with hearing problems.
Newcastle stated: “Through haptic technology, the shirts convert the stadium noise into tactile sensations in real-time…
“Fans and the match day mascots who are deaf or have hearing loss will sport these shirts in the stands.
“This promises to be a landmark event, as it marks the first instance of a hearing loss charity being promoted on a Premier League front-of-shirt, alongside the debut of these state-of-the-art shirts.”
