Newcastle have confirmed two signings just hours after the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules deadline passed – and one is a record-breaking deal.

The Magpies desperately rushed to sell players over the weekend over concerns that they could fail PSR, with the deadline arriving on June 30.

They managed to confirm the signing of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton before the deadline passed – although the Seagulls only publicly announced the £33 million move on Monday morning.
Under an hour after the 12am deadline, Newcastle confirmed that they had signed goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal.
Then came the announcement that the club had activated their option to sign left-back Lewis Hall from Chelsea, after the 19-year-old spent the 2023/24 season on loan at St James’ Park.

The deal has broken a club record for the highest fee paid for a teenager, smashing the previous record of £8.5 million spent to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Hugo Viana in 2002.
Although then Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd claimed Viana was the best young player in world football at the time, his move to Tyneside didn’t work out, and he made 39 appearances before leaving on a permanent deal four years later.

Hall will hope for a better experience at his new club, and told Newcastle’s official website upon confirmation of the move: “I am extremely proud to be able to build on last season and continue my journey at Newcastle United.

“The fans, the manager and his staff, my team-mates and everyone at the club have made me feel so welcome that I want to repay the faith they’ve shown in me.

“I gained a lot of experience last season, and with the squad we have, we’ll be looking to push on even further this season. I can’t wait to get started.”
