Allan Saint-Maximin has defended Miguel Almiron after the Paraguayan was accused of ‘refusing’ to leave Newcastle United in January.

The Magpies were prepared to sell Almiron at the beginning of the year when they received an offer from a Saudi Pro League club, believed to be Al-Shabab. The decision was ultimately left to the 30-year-old and he decided not to up sticks mid-season.

Newcastle were under intense pressure last weekend to raise funds in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). But before selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest on Sunday with just hours of the deadline to spare, one fan account bizarrely put the blame on Almiron.

The account in question criticised Almiron for not following in Allan Saint-Maximin’s footsteps after the Frenchman left St James’ Park to join Al Ahli six months earlier.

“It’s worth mentioning that if Miguel Almiron didn’t refuse a £25million move to Saudi Arabia in January, #NUFC wouldn’t find themselves in the PSR mess that they do today,” the post on X read. Suppose you could say the same about Yankuba Minteh refusing a £40m move to Lyon last week, too. “So what I’ll say is this – NEVER forget the man who reluctantly agreed to move on out of his love for the club and his understanding of what was needed for Newcastle United to move forward on AND off the pitch. Some of our current crop of players should take notice of Allan Saint-Maximin’s sacrifice.”

The post was largely criticised by Newcastle fans and it provoked a response from Saint-Maximin, who replied: “I know this message is meant to be positive towards me, but every situation is different. Please show gratitude and respect to Miggy, he’s such a good person who has always given his all for Newcastle.”

Saint-Maximin and Almiron were teammates on Tyneside for four years. The latter arrived a few months before the Frenchman for £21m from MLS side Atlanta United, and has gone to score 30 goals in 209 appearances.

There’s still a strong possibility Almiron could complete a switch to the Middle East in the coming months. According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle are in talks with a Saudi club regarding the winger. Journalist Ben Jacobs adds that the figure being discussed in £20m.
