Swap deals have become a growing trend in football this summer and it is something Leeds United have already taken advantage of.
Though some reports did suggest it was a separate transaction, Leeds were able to secure Joe Rodon’s return from Tottenham as part of the deal that took Archie Gray the other way.
The Whites also attempted to include Oliver Skipp in the move, though that was a proposal turned down by Spurs. It does not mean a move is over, though.
Gray’s sale was said to have put Leeds in a better position to keep some of their other key players, yet if reports are to be believed, it may not be long until Glen Kamara, Junior Firpo and Wilfried Gnonto follow him out of the exit door.
Kamara is undergoing a medical at Rennes today, Everton have started talks over a deal for Gnonto and Firpo is wanted by Real Betis
Everton had been keen on a deal for Gnonto this time last year but Leeds held firm in their stance he was not for sale, rejecting as many as four bids.
However, it does feel a little bit different this time around. There has been no noise to suggest Leeds will fight as hard again to keep him, and confidence is high at Everton they can get a deal done.
A fee of around £22 million could well be enough to tempt Leeds into selling, but given how much work they are starting to give themselves on the squad, a player in return may not be a bad idea.
One they should most certainly look at is striker Neal Maupay, whether that be on loan or permanently, given his proven track record at this level.
He spent last season on loan at Brentford and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Beto, Youssef Chermiti and new signing Iliman Ndiaye all seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order, it would not be a surprise if he leaves again.
Striker could well end up being a position that requires strengthening at some point this summer, with Joel Piroe attracting interest elsewhere, and Patrick Bamford available.
At 27, Maupay is in the prime of his career and could be an excellent option at this level, registering 37 goals and 13 assists in 85 Championship appearances for Brentford.
Everton spent £15 million to sign him in 2022 but has just a year left remaining on his deal, meaning Leeds should still be able to earn a big fee for Gnonto while also potentially getting Maupay in return.
What is Gnonto’s stance on leaving Leeds for Everton?
Just as was the case last summer, Gnonto is once again keen on making the switch to Everton, though is unlikely to push publicly again.
Though Gnonto did somewhat redeem his antics with his performances in the second half of the season, if he wants to go, just let him.
Leeds need enough time to find a decent replacement for the 20-year-old otherwise they could endure yet another slow start to the campaign.
Given Everton’s clear desire to get this done and the fact Leeds’ PSR concerns have been eased, though, they have to ensure they get the best deal possible, which could well include getting Maupay.
