‘Very sad’: Eddie Howe admits that move made by Newcastle in recent weeks ‘did not sit comfortably’ with him
It has been quite a challenging summer already for Newcastle United with plenty going on behind the scenes that could disrupt the harmony in the camp.
Thankfully, it looks like the club has weathered the storm(s) that have battered them since the end of last season and after hearing from Darren Eales, Paul Mitchell and now Eddie Howe, it sounds as though things are moving in the right direction.
In Eddie Howe’s interview with NUFC TV, it was strange not to hear Eddie Howe’s thoughts on the departure of Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi given how close they were, especially as that could have had a big impact on his future at the club.
However, what was interesting was seeing the usually reserved and rehearsed Eddie Howe having to bite his tongue somewhat when speaking about the outgoing transfers that were made on the last day of June.
Eddie Howe was gutted to see Elliot Anderson sold
The 30th June was PSR deadline day and it was the day that saw Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson moved on, the latter of which really seems to have annoyed Eddie Howe, and rightly so.
“It was really sad to lose both. Yankuba, of course I never got the opportunity to work with, but we wish him well, he’s an outstanding young talent and I’m sure he’ll do really well for Brighton.
“Elliot was very sad for us because he was a player that we loved both on and off the pitch. everyone at Newcastle’s worked so hard to develop him and his talents. And through PSR really, the club’s been forced into a decision through no fault of its own. It didn’t sit comfortably with me but it was almost something we had to do, we had no choice. We wish Elliot well and we’re sure he’ll go on to have an unbelievable career.”
The staff at Newcastle are clearly still reeling about PSR
It’s not often we see Howe flustered, but that little scramble to find the right words before saying that the move didn’t sit comfortably actually said more than any of the words he did use.
Howe’s comments on PSR and the fact that Anderson and Minteh were moved on echoed those that Darren Eales had made earlier in the week.
It’s clear there’s a huge frustration around the current rules, but as Eales said, the club is now in a much better position financially after coming through that mini-deadline day.
