Former Liverpool and England defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher has predicted a 1-1 opening day draw with Aston Villa this weekend, and backs the Hammers to “push for the European places” again this campaign.
Julen Lopetegui will take charge of his first Premier League match in charge of West Ham on Saturday, as he faces fellow Spanish compatriot Unai Emery on the touchline.
Carragher has predicted a close affair between the two claret and blue clubs, he told Sky Sports Super Six; “West Ham have had a really good transfer window so far and will really push for the European places, but I think this will finish 1-1. Aston Villa are a good side even though they’ve had a difficult pre-season.”
West Ham have had a brilliant record over Aston Villa in recent years, losing just one of their last twelve matches against the Villain’s, winning six in the process. In fact we are unbeaten in our last nine home fixtures against the midlands side.
West Ham fans will be hoping to see a victory on the opening day, but a draw against Villa who are one of the best teams in the league and are playing Champions League football this year would be a far from poor result. Especially when you take in to account that the new signings yet to fully settle and gel together, and important midfielder Edson Alvarez is likely to miss the match.
