Jamie Redknapp was on punditry duty for the West Ham United vs Aston Villa clash at the London Stadium.

And he noticed something extremely concerning about West Ham as a team midway through the first-half.

The Reason Behind EVERY Premier League Mascot

Jamie Redknapp was full of praise for the Hammers before the game, and lauded our summer transfer business.

However, his mood shifted after watching something in particular from the West Ham players.

In all fairness we were poor yesterday. It was a clunky performance devoid of any kind of rhythm or cohesion.

That has to be expected for a few weeks at least though, as Julen Lopetegui tries to implement his ideas and footballing philosophy.

That said, a lot of basics need to be improved upon if we are to pick up a decent result away at Crystal Palace next weekend.

Hopefully we see some big changes at Selhurst Park next week.

Jamie Redknapp spots big West Ham problem

A 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa is not a disgrace in itself – they’re a great team who qualified for the Champions League last season.

However, Lopetegui does need to oversee a really solid week of training at Rush Green, if he’s to get his players up to speed.

would also add that more of the new signings need to start – especially Niclas Fullkrug and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The more the new signings play alongside each other, the more they’ll get used to each others’ games and Lopetegui’s system.

However, basic defending is something that should come as a prerequisite.

Redknapp highlighted a big problem for West Ham, when speaking on Sky Sports (August 17th, 6:33pm).

He said, “There was a moment when Onana stood on the ball after 25 minutes, he had the freedom of the park, nobody from West Ham were closing him down and the fans were getting restless.

It was really worrying at times watching Villa cut through us like a hot knife through butter.

We looked so porous through the middle of the park, especially in transition.

The return of Edson Alvarez will obviously help with that, and he should form a solid double pivot in the middle with Guido Rodriguez.

However, I still think we need more power, energy and dynamism in the middle of the park – someone like Youssouf Fofana would do nicely.

It was the first game of the season yesterday, I get that. And as a result, I won’t be going overboard with my criticism of the performance.

However, there were some concerning signs on display from the West Ham players, and Jamie Redknapp highlighted exactly that yesterday.
