The 42-year-old left the London Stadium earlier this summer, after David Moyes was moved on and replaced by Julen Lopetegui.
Former West Ham coach Kevin Nolan clearly loves the club, and he spent four years with us as a player as well, scoring 31 goals in the process.
He played a huge role in establishing the Hammers as a top half club again, when working alongside Moyes, and he recently gave advice to Lopetegui about how to get the most out of our best players.
Lopetegui has made a slow start to life in charge of West Ham, and it has even been claimed that his job is already under threat.
Whilst I don’t believe those claims, he certainly cannot afford for his side to continue drawing and losing games for a sustained period of time.
I believe that the Spaniard will turn things around at the London Stadium. After the final 12 months of Moyes’s tenure, things had got so bad that Lopetegui is still trying to rid the players of some of the awful habits they developed on the pitch.
You won’t believe what Kevin Nolan just said about West Ham
The former Hammers coach and player has actually been speaking a lot about the Hammers in the media over the past few months.
When Nolan speaks, I usually listen because he has a lot of interesting things to say.
However, his latest offering defies belief, or any kind of sound thought for that reason.
Nolan shared something that is upsetting him when he’s watching West Ham this season, when speaking on the Premier League kick-off podcast with Darren Fletcher.
Nolan explained, “When you see the goals and the manner in which they conceded the goals, it’s upsetting for me because we worked our socks off for four and a half years. We got them to where we believe West Ham should be, that top 10. It has been really hard watch for me seeing us, well, seeing West Ham, I should say, in the position that they are in.”
Well, well, well. What an absolute load of rubbish. Now, I like Nolan a lot, and appreciate the job he did at West Ham.
However, he’s well wide of the mark with these comments. Has he forgotten how many goals the Hammers shipped under David Moyes last season?
West Ham better off without Moyes
In the Premier League last season, West Ham shipped 74 goals – a tally worsened only by the three clubs that got relegated.
That’s an average of 1.95 goals conceded per match. We were an absolutely shambles to watch defensively, and looked like conceded every time the opposing team attacked.
Bear in mind that was with Moyes setting up his side in a really deep block as well.
This year, Lopetegui’s side have shipped 10 goals in six Premier League games – an average of 1.66 per match.
I’m sure that once Jean-Clair Todibo gets up to full fitness, and develops a proper relationship and understanding with Max Kilman, the Hammers’ defensive record will improve tenfold.
Sure, West Ham haven’t been great defensively this season, but for Kevin Nolan to suggest that it has been upsetting to watch us is either incredibly delusional or just plain disingenuous.
I would suggest it’s probably the former, because Nolan isn’t a nasty bloke by any means.
I just really hate it when pundits spout out rubbish without backing up their arguments with facts.
West Ham are better off defensively this season than we were last, and that is a fact.
