James Tarkowski admits one Everton player should be captain instead of him, the ‘real leader’

Everton fans will have been delighted to see their side begin to pull things back in their favour over the last three games.

Sean Dyche‘s side made a dreadful start to the 2024/25 campaign which had saw Everton lose their opening four games in the Premier League.

Fortunately, the Toffees have been able to find some form recently with five points coming from their last three games.

That has been enough to pull the Blues out of the relegation zone but it is no time to relax with it still extremely tight around the drop zone.

But it seems as if the mood around the club is positive with James Tarkowski sharing his praise for one of the real leaders behind the scenes on Merseyside.

What James Tarkowski said about Seamus Coleman at Everton

During Everton’s recent struggles, Dyche will have been putting hs faith in his senior players like Tarkowski to help pull the Toffees out of their issues.

However, Everton have been without their captain Seamus Coleman for most of the season through injury.

The Irishman has only played 90 minutes of Premier League football which came in the frustrating defeat against Bournemouth.

Speaking to the Everton website, Tarkowski has waxed lyrical about the leadership skills of the club captain, Coleman.

“If I need to lean on him when I need to speak or guide me in certain situations then he’s always there. For me, I’m there under Shay, as his support act, because he’s the real leader and I support him wherever I can,” he said.

“Look, Shay’s passion and love for this football club is unrivalled from all the people I’ve met. He loves the Club like you wouldn’t believe. When he speaks, people listen, first of all.

“He had a point to make [at half-time against Crystal Palace] and he made it in the dressing room. In my time here, Shay’s had a few moments when he felt like he had to say something. Other players do speak, of course, but I think when Shay speaks people really do listen because you feel it.

We all know how much he loves this football club, how much passion he has for it, and when he speaks, you see it. He wears it.”

Seamus Coleman injury update

Coleman was injured whilst on international duty with the Republic of Ireland – ironically against England.

The right-back suffered an ankle injury during a coming together with Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and has not featured since.

Although no date has been sent on his return, Dyche has admitted recently that Coleman is nearing his comeback from the ankle issue.

“Coleman is a bit longer as well. Not too much longer, we’re a bit hopeful over this international period he gets closer,” he said earlier this month.
