Arne Slot admits to making big Liverpool decision he knew Everton fans wouldn’t like

Everton will already have one eye on the Merseyside derby, which is set for the 7th of December, and Arne Slot has made an interesting admission about a decision he’s made.

Sean Dyche won’t look past the next game for Everton, which happens to be a trip to St Mary’s to face Southampton in the Premier League.

However, there are a number of injury issues for Sean Dyche ahead of the Saints, with Dwight McNeil battling to be fit to play a part at the weekend.

James Garner is also set to miss out as he continues to recover from a back injury, while Tim Iroegbunam suffers with a foot stress fracture.

Russell Martin has some injury worries of his own, as Flynn Downes is a doubt after his Southampton squad have been hit with a virus ahead of the clash.

However, Everton fans’ attention will briefly be switched off the game and onto an Arne Slot comment, as he made an interesting admission recently.

Liverpool find themselves second in the table after Arne Slot’s first nine games in charge.

Interestingly, he was asked about a key decision he made when he joined Liverpool, and it actually turned out to involve a former Everton man.

When speaking on the Liverpool YouTube channel, Slot admitted that he had to ask for permission to hire John Heitinga, because of the fact it may not go down well with Everton fans.

He was asked.

“Did you know that John Heitinga played for Everton?”

Slot responded.

“Yes, I knew.”

The interviewer then responded with.

“Was there any doubt?”

The Liverpool boss then said.

“To be fair, I did ask around here: ‘Would this be a problem?’. Would this lead to people saying, ‘What is happening over here?’ And the reaction was that the only problem could be for himself, because of his legacy he had at Everton. Because I don’t think the Everton fans really like seeing him over here.”

John Heitinga’s time at Everton

John Heitinga spent five years at Goodison Park from 2009 to 2014, making 140 appearances. He became a fan favourite and enjoyed many great memories on Merseyside.

In 2016, Heitinga made it clear where his loyalties were when it comes to Merseyside.

Taking to social media prior to a clash between Liverpool and Everton, he said: “Happy to support Everton tonight in the Merseyside derby. Game of the year! Once a Blue, always a Blue.”

We must admit, it’s not easy seeing Heitinga kitted out in a Liverpool kit; it just looks wrong.
