Jose Mourinho could make a sensational Premier League comeback with Everton, reckons Alan Shearer. Mourinho, who was hired and fired by Dan Friedkin at Roma, delivering the Italian club’s first European trophy in 61 years in between, was linked with the Blues shortly after the Houston-based billionaire’s takeover deal with Farhad Moshiri was announced.

Former Everton captain Alan Stubbs spoke out on the prospect of hiring the self-styled ‘Special One,’ while this correspondent also addressed the matter. Everton manager Sean Dyche’s current contract expires at the end of this season and Mourinho, who joined Fenerbahce in the summer, has already started complaining about life in Turkey.

Despite his side securing a 3-2 victory at Kevin Campbell’s former club Trabzonspor on Sunday following a dramatic winning goal some 12 minutes into stoppage time – prompting the 61-year-old to attempt a knee-slide celebration, only to fall flat on his face – he launched into an incredible tirade, hitting out at a “bad smelling” league; a “little boy” referee and claiming the VAR official was busy “drinking tea,” complaining that “nobody abroad wants to watch the Turkish league.”

With the Portuguese coach, who in two spells at Chelsea won a hat-trick of English titles, seemingly unhappy in Istanbul, Shearer, who is the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer with 260 goals, reckons Mourinho could reunite with Friedkin, who, as a highly-skilled pilot, personally flew him into the Eternal City when he was appointed in July 2021. He told Betfair: “Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been back in the news and media a lot recently, and the one thing you cannot do is underestimate him and his record.

“He creates headlines, whether that’s for winning trophies or being brutally honest as he was at the weekend when he said, ‘nobody watches the Turkish league.’ He is box office, and I think there’s always a message he’s trying to get across in the background so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was him edging for a move back to the Premier League.

“Where could he go? Let us not forget he was recently at Roma, whose owners are now close to their purchase of Everton – is there a subliminal message in there for what his future holds?

With his record, any club in the Premier League would always be interested in him, however, he isn’t scared of telling it like it is at the football club, so he’s going to tell it like it is and he’s not afraid of causing chaos, It wouldn’t surprise me if we see him back in the Premier League within the next 12 months.

“We know he’s always spoken very highly of Newcastle, and the link comes with his connection to Sir Bobby Robson. He’s always complimented the stadium, the atmosphere and the fans thanks to that link, but Eddie (Howe) is rightfully going nowhere at this moment in time.”
