Everton had an unbeaten streak in the Premier League that dated back to mid-September prior to the loss to Southampton, but the manner of the loss has turned things sour.
Russell Martin actually thought that Everton set up well and made it ‘difficult’ for his Southampton side in a tribute to how Sean Dyche was tactically.
However, it was the manner of the defeat that left Everton fans seething, with just 34% possession against a Southampton side that hadn’t even won a game prior.
Enjoying less possession of the ball could be understandable against a side like Manchester City, but to let a struggling side dominate you just seems tactically wrong.
Interestingly, that wasn’t the only thing that caused a bit of a stir, as a decision Sean Dyche made at the weekend sent a shock through the Everton dressing room.

Sean Dyche leaves his Everton players shocked after leaving Jarrad Branthwaite out of the starting XI
Jarrad Branthwaite hasn’t been fancied as much as Everton fans expected over the last couple of games.
He played just six minutes in the Premier League against Southampton and Fulham combined, despite now being fully fit after returning from injury.
This was something that appears to have shocked the Everton players as well.
According to TalkSPORT, Branthwaite’s omission from the starting line-up for Southampton came as a shock to the Toffees dressing room.
Michael Ball didn’t hold back on the Branthwaite decision
Michael Ball went on a full on rant this week after Dyche’s decision to leave Branthwaite out of his side, echoing the views of those on Merseyside.
“He’s got Jarrad Branthwaite, the best defender at the club sat on the bench for most of the game so he’s leaving himself open for criticism and asking for trouble with the fans if he doesn’t win games.
“Unless there are changes, I fear he could start losing the fans and even losing the players, if he hasn’t done so already.”
Well, it looks as if Sean Dyche is already starting to lose the players judging by their reaction to the Branthwaite decision, especially when you now look back at the performance in hindsight.
