Everton in their current form have no ambition other than to simply remain a Premier League club, according to Jason Cundy.

Speaking on talkSPORT (9 November, 5:40pm), Cundy said the last few seasons have resembled “Groundhog Day”, hovering close to the bottom three but never looking like falling through the trapdoor.

The Toffees drew 0-0 with West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday in a game sparse of quality, and Cundy questioned whether the current ownership are aiming any higher than simply staying up.

He said: “Everton have been in this situation it feels every single season. It’s like Groundhog Day.

“Every season, Everton – this team that are flirting with the bottom three, don’t really get sucked into it, they just hover. I’m finding it dull and boring now.

“You wonder what the remit is from the owners every season with Everton. Is it just to stay in the Premier League?

“Imagine if Everton go into that new stadium in the Championship. That is an absolute disaster.”

New Everton ownership need to hit the ground running

While Cundy is spot-on when bemoaning the similarity of the Toffees’ plights in recent seasons, the current campaign is expected to be the one which ushers in the end of “Groundhog Day” on Merseyside.

Dan Friedkin’s imminent arrival at Goodison Park – barring any last-minute complications – will draw a line in the sand between times new and old for the Blues, particularly with what’s on the horizon.

Everton are set to move into their new home on Liverpool’s Bramley-Moore Dock in the summer of 2025

The relocation to Bramley-Moore Dock next summer is set to have a transformational effect off the pitch [Kieran Maguire, 8 July], and Friedkin is expected to continue that transition on the field too.

Friedkin will not want his new, flagship club to be languishing in the lower reaches of the Premier League table, and with Sean Dyche out of contract in 2025, a big name could well be appointed in his place.

Staying up this season remains the ultimate goal with new ownership, stadium and cash reserves all in the pipeline, and Blues fans will hope they’re currently sitting through the end credits of Groundhog Day.

In other Everton news, one new Toffees signing is under pressure to have an instant impact once he eventually makes his debut.
