After a quiet start to the season at Newcastle United, Alexander Isak has now scored in four consecutive games, despite not appearing quite at his best.

Isak has become absolutely crucial for Eddie Howe at St James’ Park, explaining why Newcastle have been so keen to agree a new contract.

Newcastle were making progress in contract talks with Isak a few months ago, but discussions have now taken a fresh twist.

TBR Football understands that Isak’s camp have been left ‘shocked by Newcastle’s current stance over his prospective new deal.

Alexander Isak contract talks with Newcastle have not gone to plan

Having tied down Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon to new deals, Isak was in-line for new terms and talks had been ongoing since early in the year.

However, Howe confirmed that issues had arisen which he labelled as ‘PSR’ related. Therefore, due to the fact that Isak was already tied to the club until 2028, the situation was not seen as a real issue in the ‘short-term’.

Isak was due to get fresh terms as he is not one the highest earners at the club, and talks first took place before Easter.

The Sweden international was expected to come to an agreement over the summer but things have not gone according to plan, and sources have confirmed that a ‘number of hurdles’ have emerged.

TBR understands that one of the issues was a prospective release clause.
