Andy Madley made the correct call to award Ashley Young a penalty in Everton’s draw with Manchester United and should have stuck to his guns, ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has said.
Everton defender Young thought he had won a penalty late in the 2-2 draw with Man United at Goodison Park after being felled by a combination of Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt.

However, controversy was to follow when Madley was advised by VAR Matt Donohue to go and re-assess the incident on the pitch-side monitor.
Madley consequently overturned his decision, with some suggesting that he had not been shown the correct angle to make his judgement.
Madley told to speak to Webb after Everton v Man Utd error
The decision has sparked plenty of controversy, with many feeling that Man United were lucky and Everton should have been awarded a spot-kick.
Ultimately, though, it was frustration for David Moyes and his Toffees side, who had already squandered a 2-0 lead after first-half goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Ex-FIFA ref Keith Hackett, though, thinks Madley should hold talks with current PGMOL chief Howard Webb because he believes the official was wrongly advised to go to the monitor for the decision he made on Young.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Hackett said: “Andy Madley is a solid Premier League referee and he made the correct decision to award a penalty kick to Everton for a clear holding offence.
“I hope that he will be having a word in Howard Webb’s ear to ask why VAR intervened on his correct decision.”
Everton need to focus on the positives v Man Utd
While it was certainly a frustrating end to proceedings at Goodison Park, there were plenty of positives for Moyes and his side to take.
The Toffees were fantastic in the first half and were still the better side before Man United scored a quickfire double through Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.

Ultimately, though, it’s still 14 points from the last 18 available and Moyes has done a superb job to move away from relegation trouble, which is the ultimately aim ahead of the move to Bramley Moore Dock.
So, sure it was frustrating, but Everton and Moyes have to look at the positives from their 2-2 draw with Man United because there was a lot more to like than dislike.
It’s just a shame that VAR controversy has overshadowed what was an excellent Toffees performance.
