Newcastle United’s search for a new midfielder could reunite Sandro Tonali with a familiar face.

After three frustrating transfer windows with very little business, Newcastle United are back in a position where they can spend this summer.
Paul Mitchell wants to improve three areas before the start of the 2025/26 season, including a new right winger which has been the priority position for the past year.

Mitchell has been unable to make his stamp on this Newcastle side until now because of Profit and Sustainability Rules eating away at Newcastle’s budget.

But with a £73m PSR boost due in the summer, there should be plenty of financial flexibility, which will allow Mitchell to also look at strengthening Newcastle’s midfield.
Eddie Howe believes central midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position, but that could change in the summer when sales are made.

Sean Longstaff could leave Newcastle this summer and would require a replacement. It seems one target Newcastle have their eyes on is Hakan Calhanoglu.

A report earlier this week claimed Newcastle made an enquiry about Calhanoglu.
Hakan Calhanoglu used to play alongside Sandro Tonali

While Calhanoglu is now starring at Inter, where he has scored seven goals from midfield this season, he used to represent the red half of Milan.

Calhanoglu spent four years at AC Milan between 2017 and 2021, where he was joined in midfield by Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali in 2020.

During their one season together, AC Milan finished second in Serie A with Calhanoglu playing in an advanced midfield role while Tonali sat deeper – similar to his role at Newcastle this season.

Both players have been sorely missed by Milan since their exit, with former midfielder Massimo Ambrosini suggesting the club will “regret” letting them leave.

When asked who Milan might consider to be their ‘biggest regret’ – Amrbosini said: “For the heart I say Tonali, while for the player he has become I say Calhanoglu,”
