Although Eddie Howe is having to work with a depleted squad at the moment, his available players were powerless when it came to stopping Liverpool’s two goals in either half.

Howe criticised Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali for their efforts in the game. Both players were at fault for the goals and struggled to leave their mark on the game. Guimaraes was ‘awful’ against Liverpool, according to John Anderson who suggested that the Brazilian has been struggling for some time.

Guimaraes has a chance to rest ahead of Newcastle United’s next Premier League game in a week. Newcastle face Brighton in the FA Cup fifth round where Howe could rotate his squad like he did for the previous two games in the competition.

With the result a possible preview of how the Carabao Cup final could play out, Alan Shearerhas revealed what really surprised him in the defeat.
