Newcastle have been dealt another devastating injury setback ahead of their Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. Defender Sven Botman is due for knee surgery, which means that Eddie Howe has lost three key players in just a few days. Anthony Gordon has been suspended for three matches after receiving a straight red card in their thrilling FA Cup loss to Brighton at home on Sunday, although the Magpies can contest the decision. On Tuesday, it was revealed that left-back Lewis Hall will be out for the rest of the season due to a foot injury.

Additionally, there are worries about striker Alexander Isak, who was forced to leave the pitch before extra-time against Brighton. Now, Botman has joined the trio on the sidelines as he is scheduled to undergo surgery for a knee issue. The Dutch player only made his comeback from a 10-month absence in January following an ACL injury. It’s reported that Botman’s new problem is with his other knee and Newcastle are hopeful that it won’t be as severe as his previous layoff.

The 25-year-old has missed the Magpies’ last five matches, and a consultation with a specialist this week determined that surgery is the best option. However, there was some positive news for Newcastle supporters on Tuesday afternoon when Isak was seen participating in the club’s promotional day ahead of next Sunday’s final.

The Swedish player was also photographed training after a statement confirmed that his team-mate Hall, who was tipped for an England call-up, wouldn’t play again this season.

The club said in a statement: “Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the 2024/25 season after sustaining an injury to a bone in his foot,” and continued, “The 20-year-old was injured during the Magpies’ Premier League fixture at Liverpool.

“Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club’s medical team. Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Lewis the very best with his surgery and recovery.”

Manager Eddie Howe is set to give a squad update in a press conference slated for Friday, ahead of their Monday match against West Ham. Following their disappointing FA Cup match, the Magpies may challenge Gordon’s red card.

Howe explained: “Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation.

“I’d need to see it, I can’t sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I’ve done the work that you’ve done and looked at it. But knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there.”
