Premier League release immediate statement after Aston Villa Morgan Rogers goal disallowed
Aston Villa celebrated a second goal against Brentford, only for it to be chalked off by VAR

The Premier League have released a statement after Aston Villa were denied a second goal during their trip to Brentford on Saturday.
After Ollie Watkins put Villa ahead in the 49th minute, Villa thought they had doubled their lead moments later. This time, Watkins turned provider as he ran in behind before squaring the ball across the box for Morgan Rogers to tuck home beyond Mark Flekken.
However, following a VAR check, the goal was disallowed. They felt that Watkins strayed offside in the build-up and Villa’s advantage stayed at 1-0.
And after Rogers’ strike was chalked off, the Premier League released a statement to explain the decision. It read: “#BREAVL – 49′ VAR OVERTURN VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and established that Watkins was in an offside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”
Despite that, it was a fast start to the second half from Villa. Following a dour first period that ended 0-0, Watkins sparked the game into life just after the interval. He ran down the left channel and decided to take a shot, which took a deflection and flew through Bees ‘keeper Flekken.
After Rogers then saw his goal chalked off, Villa had to defend a wave of Brentford pressure. Thomas Frank’s side pushed to get back into the game and created half chances, though they didn’t conjure up much of serious note. Yoane Wissa had an effort saved by Robin Olsen, while Keane Lewis-Potter’s cross was well defended by Axel Disasi.
In the 65th minute, Frank fumed and thought Brentford should have had a penalty. Kevin Schade went down inside the area after some contact from Disasi. VAR had another look at the incident but agreed with the on-field decision and the Bees were denied a spot kick.
