The Toffees went behind in the Goodison Park clash to Tomas Soucek, who curled home a well-taken effort from just inside the penalty area.
But, David Moyes’ side didn’t give in and continued to push for an equaliser until Jake O’Brien headed home Idrissa Gueye’s cross in the stoppage time.
Everton remain unbeaten in nine, which is their longest streak without defeat since February 2017, when Ronald Koeman was in charge.
Speaking after the game, Moyes reflected on the game and explained why he wasn’t able to get the best out of Carlos Alcaraz.
David Moyes says Carlos Alcaraz didn’t really work as a left-winger
Speaking to Everton’s media channel, Moyes explained that he didn’t really get the best out of Alcaraz’s position.
“Well, we thought it might suit because of the way West Ham might possibly line up and we didn’t want to get outnumbered in midfield,” the 61-year-old said.
“We’re playing him (Alcaraz) a little bit out of position but at the moment Doucs’ form’s been very good, Charly’s scored goals (and) come on and made a difference, so I wanted to see if I could find a way where it could work for both of them.
“I think in some ways it did (work) but in other ways, I didn’t really get the best out of maybe Charly and his position. I thought as well, you know, Douc’s didn’t have much space to run in behind in the first half, especially.
“So that affected us a little bit in how we set up.”
Carlos Alcaraz closing in on £15m transfer
It’s understood Alcaraz has a £15m clause in his loan deal that will be activated if he starts six or more games.
Alcaraz made his third start for the Toffees since joining on a six-month loan from Flamengo, so with nine games remaining, it seems his permanent clause is set to activate.
Everton fans have been impressed with Alcaraz since his arrival, though, he’s still not quite found a position in Moyes’ system.
