Alan Shearer almost had Sky Sports ‘taken off the air’ during Carabao Cup final because of what he did

Mark Chapman made a joke during Sky Sports’ broadcast of Newcastle United vs. Liverpool.

Alan Shearer would have taken Sky Sports ‘off the air’ had his text message to Mark Chapman been read out during the broadcast of the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle United beat Liverpool 2-1 to win this season’s Carabao Cup.

Dan Burn opened the scoring with a powerful header before Alexander Isak doubled his side’s lead. Federico Chiesa pulled one back late on following a VAR review.

A host of celebrities and Newcastle legends were in the crowd at Wembley Stadium, including Ant and Dec as Clive Tyldesley left viewers in stitches with his comment on commentary.

Newcastle great Shearer also watched on as he was shown during Sunday’s broadcast.

Shearer was picked up by the match cameras as Newcastle fans cheered his appearance on the big screen.

After the result, Chapman revealed on air that he had texted the Premier League icon about the game.

He joked that he received a message that would have taken Sky Sports off the air.

“You can see Shearer on the big screen here, which is why they are cheering,” Chapman explained during Sky Sports’ coverage of Newcastle’s post-match celebrations.

“About 15 minutes ago, I texted him, ‘Are you calm?’ I can’t tell you what he replied; it will have us taken off the air.”

Fans say the same thing after spotting what Anthony Gordon did in Newcastle's Carabao Cup celebrations

Fans say the same thing after spotting what Anthony Gordon did in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup celebrations

Gordon was present at Wembley despite being suspended for Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool.

Fans spotted what Anthony Gordon did during Newcastle’s Carabao Cup celebrations after beating Liverpool at Wembley – and they’ve all made the same comparison.

Gordon missed the final, which Newcastle won 2-1, through suspension.

The England winger was sent off for violent conduct during the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, thus incurring a three-match ban rather than the usual one for a straight red card.

He was, though, present at Wembley to watch the Magpies win their first trophy since lifting the Fairs Cup all the way back in 1969.

Goals either side of half-time from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were enough for Eddie Howe’s side, who were comfortably the better team on the day in London.

Federico Chiesa scored a consolation in second half injury time, but Liverpool could have few complaints about the final result.

As he had played in enough matches to earn a medal, Gordon – who is in Thomas Tuchel‘s first England squad – walked up the Wembley steps with the rest of his team-mates.

Even though he played no part in the victory, the 25-year-old still adorned a Newcastle shirt with ‘Winners’ emblazoned on the front of it.

And although he wasn’t quite wearing a full kit, fans made the immediate obvious comparison.

One wrote: “Anthony Gordon doing his John Terry impression, having changed into his playing kit for the celebrations.”

A second said: “Did I just spot John Terry or was that Anthony Gordon?”

A third, meanwhile, hilariously noticed outside Wembley: “Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes have just run down Wembley Way with their winners’ medals around their necks.”

And a fourth added: “Just seen Anthony Gordon running down Wembley Way.”

The moment will have been even sweeter for Gordon as his side’s 2-1 victory came against the rivals of his former club Everton.

The winger was a boyhood Liverpool fan but was released by the club aged 11 before being snapped up by the Toffees.

Gordon made his first team debut aged just 16 for Everton, spending six years at the club before joining Newcastle for a fee of around £40 million in January 2023.

Commentator spots what Virgil van Dijk did seconds after Liverpool lost the Carabao Cup final in unaired moment

Commentator spots what Virgil van Dijk did seconds after Liverpool lost the Carabao Cup final in unaired moment

Virgil van Dijk’s gesture didn’t go unnoticed.

Virgil van Dijk’s gesture seconds after Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United was spotted following the result.

Van Dijk was unable to inspire his side to yet another Carabao Cup triumph, having scored the winner in last season’s final against Chelsea.

Newcastle ran out 2-1 winners on Sunday, with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak ending the club’s 70-year wait for a trophy.

Burn headed home just before the break as Isak doubled his team’s advantage seven minutes after the interval. Federico Chiesa pulled one back following a VAR review.

Despite the disappointing defeat at Wembley Stadium, Van Dijk produced a glassy gesture to Burn and the rest of the Newcastle squad.

According to Stephen Warnock, Van Dijk showed ‘respect’ to every Newcastle player by shaking their hand following the final whistle.

“There was an embrace between Virgil van Dijk and Dan Burn,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Van Dijk stood at the Newcastle huddle – he went around and shook every player’s hand.

“He respected what Newcastle have done today.

“Class. A sign of respect for Newcastle.”

Van Dijk played the entire game as Liverpool suffered their second defeat in a row following their Champions League elimination.

As for Newcastle, the club ended their wait for a major trophy and their performance pleased Eddie Howe.

“I am very, very emotional and have been all day, which is very unlike me. We knew what was at stake for all of our fans. We wanted to do them proud and win the trophy,” he said after the game.

“I am so, so pleased with the result and performance. We deserved to win but it was tough when Liverpool scored. I was thinking about extra time. We always make it difficult for ourselves. It was never going to be 2-0.”

Howe added: “We were well aware of history. We wanted to do the club proud. We wanted to score. We wanted to perform, we wanted to win. We are breaking new ground. I thought we were magnificent.”

Eddie Howe was blown away by what Liverpool players did after Carabao Cup final defeat

Newcastle ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought with a win at Wembley.

After seeing how Arne Slot and his players reacted to their Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle, an emotional Eddie Howe praised Liverpool for showing “absolute class” at Wembley.

Newcastle finally ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought on Sunday afternoon as goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed a historic 2-1 win.

Liverpool, on the other hand, looked fatigued throughout and were ultimately outplayed by their opponents – just days after being knocked out of the Champions League by PSG in a draining penalty shoot-out.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Arne Slot explained why it felt “completely different” to their Champions League exit.

“Even Liverpool can lose football games,” he began. “We were outplayed, in their style. Today it wasn’t about running; it was more about duels. This game went exactly the way they wanted it to, with a lot of fight and a lot of duels.”

He added: “This game had no intensity, so you cannot even judge if we were tired physically. There was nothing to press because they played over our press. The game was slow.”

It was a disappointing afternoon for the Premier League leaders, but they showed “absolute class” after Sunday’s full-time whistle, according to Eddie Howe, who was full of praise for how they handled the loss.

Howe knows how it feels to be on the losing side of a Carabao Cup final following their defeat to Manchester United in 2023.

“I have to compliment Liverpool,” he began, as per Liverpool World. “Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League by a mile this year and we knew we had to raise our game to have any chance.

“We needed everyone to give their maximum game and I thought they did. I have to give compliments to how Liverpool handled themselves after. We have been there two years ago – it is a horrible feeling. I thought they were absolute class – the manager, the players were really good.”

Moments after the final whistle, former Liverpool left-back Stephen Warnock spotted the noble actions of Virgil van Dijk as he approached the Newcastle squad.

“There was an embrace between Virgil van Dijk and Dan Burn,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “Van Dijk stood at the Newcastle huddle – he went around and shook every player’s hand.”

Mo Salah did something in Carabao Cup final he's not done in 391 previous Liverpool games

Mo Salah did something in Carabao Cup final he’s not done in 391 previous Liverpool games

It was an uncharacteristic performance from the Egyptian forward.

Mohamed Salah set an unwanted record in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final as Newcastle ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with a deserving 2-1 win over Liverpool.

It has been a campaign to remember for Salah, who has notched 32 goals and 22 assists for the Reds as they sit 12 points clear in the Premier League title race with nine games left to play.

For the past few months, Salah has shown no signs of slowing down under Arne Slot.

He has scored and assisted in 11 Premier League matches in 2024/25, which is the most by a player in a single season in one of Europe’s big five leagues since Lionel Messi in 2014/15.

Salah is also the first player to register more than 25 goals and 15 assists in a Premier League season but on Sunday afternoon, he produced one of his most ineffective games in a Liverpool shirt.

In fact, after recording just 23 touches of the ball against Newcastle, a remarkable stat emerged regarding Salah’s performance at Wembley.

According to Opta, Salah failed to attempt a single shot or create a chance during the Carabao Cup final as full-back Tino Livramento produced a superb performance for Eddie Howe’s men.

“For the first time in his Liverpool career, Mohamed Salah neither attempted a shot nor created a chance in a match where he played 90+ minutes,” said the analytics company, who described his performance as “uncharacteristic”.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the final, co-commentator Gary Neville gave his take on Salah’s subdued performance. “I’ve never seen Mo Salah as quiet as I have in this game,” said Neville.

“He has had three touches, 25 minutes into this second half.”

Jamie Carragher, on the other hand, explained why he “felt sorry” for Salah, after goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed a 2-1 win for the Magpies.

“I think the lack of pace in attack is glaring,” he said on Sky Sports. “And I almost feel a little bit sorry for Mo Salah. He took a bit of criticism after the two Paris Saint-Germain games, against possibly the best left-back in the world Mendes, who was fantastic, he didn’t do too much and he wasn’t great today.”

Carragher added: “He doesn’t get help from the other attackers. This isn’t like under Jurgen Klopp where [Sadio] Mane or [Roberto] Firmino could bail them out of trouble. The other attackers Liverpool have got are good players but they’re not great players.”

“They’ve relied on him (Salah) too much, so I don’t want to see too much criticism of Mo Salah over this last week. What it’s shone a light on is that Liverpool need to go out and buy two attackers – not as squad players, but possibly to play alongside Mo Salah, hopefully, next season.”

Thoughts on Salah’s performance? Let us know in the comments.
