Following the international break, Callum McGregor is expected to make an instant comeback to the Celtic team. Last Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Rangers at Parkhead left the Hoops severely lacking their inspirational captain, who was unable to recover from a calf problem. However, it’s believed that McGregor will be ready for the March 29 visit from Hearts, as the treble-chasing Celtics try to get back on track as soon as possible in their attempt to win four straight. The 31-year-old has been able to concentrate entirely on his rehabilitation thanks to the lull in domestic play caused by Scotland’s Nations League playoff matches against Greece.
McGregor is eager to return, and manager Brendan Rodgers will be delighted to have him back in the team so soon. Stoppers Austin Trusty and Liam Scales, who were out due to injuries versus Gers, are working on their fitness, while long-term crocks James Forrest and Paulo Bernardo are preparing to return. Rodgers expressed uncertainty regarding McGregor and Trusty’s fitness for the Glasgow derby. He stated, “We gave Callum every chance to make it, but he felt a tightness in his calf yesterday during the final training session.”
“So, it was too big a risk to put him in and put him out for much longer and also he felt like he couldn’t really function how he would normally.
“Auston, likewise, just felt a soreness in his calf. He tried to give it a go but just wasn’t fit enough to play in the game.
“You just change the personnel. We know how we play. Luke McCowan comes in, Arne [Engels] comes back one. Maik Nawrocki being the one that’s been really unfortunate not to have played.
“The form of the three centre-halves in front of him has meant that he hasn’t had the chance to play so much. He’s trained ever so well. He’s always been ready and today he gets the chance to play in a game that he’s played in before and done really well.”
