Newcastle United star ‘at risk’ of Premier League ban as key man set for return after month out

Newcastle United face Leicester City on Monday night with one of their key players at risk of a Premier League suspension.

The Magpies head to Leicester having won three matches in a row in all competitions but, by virtue of playing after all of their rivals for European football, likely with points and ground to make up. Champions League qualification is the club’s ultimate ambition and with nine games of the season to go, Eddie Howe’s side know they must perform in each and every one of them to give themselves a chance of returning to that competition.

With such a crucial run-in to come, Howe will be relying on his key players to step-up and help win his side points. He, and Newcastle, certainly can’t risk having any of them suspended, but one key player is facing that potential eventuality.

Joelinton facing Premier League ban

Joelinton is just one yellow card away from a two-match Premier League ban. The Brazilian has picked up nine yellow cards in 25 league appearances so far this campaign – and must not pick up another in his next three matches in order to avoid a two-game ban.

FA rules dictate that ‘players who receive a total of 10 yellow cards in their side’s first 32 Premier League matches receive a two-match suspension.’ Newcastle United’s 32nd game of the season comes against Crystal Palace on Wednesday 16 April, meaning Joelinton must not be booked on Monday night against Leicester City or in their next two matches against Manchester United the Eagles in order to ensure he can play in all of their remaining league games.

Joelinton has already served a one-match ban this season for accumulating five yellow cards. Fortunately for the Magpies, that suspension came during their trip to Portman Road just before Christmas, a game that he would likely have missed anyway after sustaining a knock in their previous outing against Brentford.

Newcastle United’s Joelinton is in hot water, facing a potential ban from the Premier League due to an accumulation of yellow cards. The Brazilian midfielder has been cautioned eight times this season, and his latest booking against Tottenham Hotspur has put him in danger of a one-match suspension.

The Premier League’s disciplinary points system is designed to track players’ behavior and impose suspensions accordingly. Players accumulate points for yellow and red cards, with suspensions triggered when they reach specific thresholds. Joelinton’s eight yellow cards this season have earned him eight disciplinary points, putting him close to the threshold for a one-match ban.

A potential ban for Joelinton would be a significant blow to Newcastle United’s midfield options. The team has relied heavily on Joelinton’s energy and creativity in the middle of the park, and his absence would force manager Eddie Howe to reshuffle his lineup. Newcastle United’s upcoming fixtures are crucial, and the absence of a key player like Joelinton could impact their chances of achieving their season

Joelinton’s disciplinary record has raised concerns about his tendency to commit fouls. While he is known for his tireless work rate and commitment to the team, his aggression on the pitch has sometimes gotten the better of him. Newcastle United fans will hope that Joelinton can manage his behavior and avoid a suspension, which would be a significant setback for the team.

Joelinton’s potential ban serves as a reminder of the importance of discipline in the Premier League. As Newcastle United navigates its busy schedule, the team will need Joelinton to be at his best to achieve its goals. With careful management and a bit of luck, Joelinton can avoid a suspension and continue to play a vital role for Newcastle United.
