Paul Mitchell has already agreed Newcastle United’s first summer signing ahead of June exit

Paul Mitchell has already agreed Newcastle United’s first summer signing ahead of leaving at the end of June.

Antonio Cordero will play his last game for Malaga this weekend ahead of officially completing a move to Newcastle United.

The Magpies have been in talks with Cordero and his representatives since the turn of the year ahead of the 18-year-old’s contract expiring next month.

United are understood to have faced stiff competition from Barcelona and Real Madrid as well as Porto, but Cordero has opted for a move to Newcastle. He and his family were given a tour of St James’ Park and the club’s facilities earlier this year.

Malaga host Burgos in their final game of the 2024-25 La Liga 2 season on Saturday evening, where Cordero is expected to say his goodbyes.

The teenager has since established himself as a regular in Malaga’s first team since making his debut in 2023. In 38 La Liga 2 appearances this campaign, he has scored six goals and provided seven assists.

Paul Mitchell is leaving Newcastle United

Cordero could mark Paul Mitchell’s last signing at Newcastle after it was announced he’d be leaving his role as sporting director at the end of June.

Mitchell said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year, including Eddie Howe, Becky Langley, the players, staff, owners and fans. It has been an honour to be part of the club and to work with some incredible people.

“I’m leaving at a time that is right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales – someone who I have worked so closely with in my career – moving on soon.

“The club is in great hands on and off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building. I’d like to wish everyone connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future.”

Mitchell only succeeded Dan Ashworth in July last year and while he has failed to make a major first-team signing, he has overseen the arrival of several young players.

Newcastle have already agreed to sign Dinamo Tbilisi forward Vaktang Salia, with a move set to be made official when he turns 18 in August. In January, Turkish midfielder Baran Yildiz arrived from Genclerbirligi.

Newcastle United expected to loan out Antonio Cordero

Cordero is set to pen a five-year contract until June 2030, though is expected to spend his first year out on loan.

Newcastle adopted a similar approach with Yankuba Minteh, who they signed from Danish side Odense Boldklub for £7million before quickly loaning him to Feyenoord for the 2023-24 campaign.

Eddie Howe had planned to integrate Minteh into the first-team squad last summer but was instead sold to Brighton & Hove Albion for £33m to help the club comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

It has been suggested that Ajax are leading the race for Cordero, however according to Spanish news outlet Fundo Segunda, Malaga want to re-sign him on loan next season in an agreement they believe suits all parties.
