Ruben Amorim has named Manchester United’s squad for the American leg of their pre-season tour with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha both involved. However, the reason behind why Harry Maguire’s name was omitted from the Portuguese tactician’s initial 25-man selection has since been revealed.
Ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, which will include no form of European football for the Red Devils, Amorim’s men are making the journey across the Atlantic to compete in the Premier League Summer Series for the first time.
The club will play against West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton ahead of an all-important season, but there were fears they’d have to do so without the experience of Maguire at the back. Matthijs de Ligt, Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro are among the defenders going.
Maguire, despite being stripped of his captaincy in July 2023 by former boss Erik ten Hag, has been a key figure for the Old Trafford outfit since Amorim replaced the Dutchman. It, therefore, had come as a surprise to learn that he would not be travelling with his teammates to America.
According to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, the central defender – who played a total of 40 times for the club last season – had not been included due to a personal matter, though there was always the belief that he would be able to join up with the club later on.
Maguire, however, has now taken to Instagram to thank supporters for their concern. In that statement, he also revealed that he would be travelling solo to the United States tomorrow instead. “All is fine now,” he wrote. “I will be travelling tomorrow to meet up with the squad. Thanks for your concern.”
Perhaps less of a surprise is the fact that Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia – all of whom have been given time to find new clubs this summer – joined Maguire as the notable omissions from Amorim’s squad travelling Stateside.
The Old Trafford faithful will be pleased to learn that Amorim is not afraid to lean on his youth. Tyler Fredricson, who made his senior debut last term, has been included. Reece Munro and Diego Leon, both defenders, have also been named as the Red Devils gear up for next season.
Elsewhere, midfield duo Jack Fletcher and Sekou Kone have kept their place from the Sweden trip, while Godwill Kukonki – who recently signed his maiden professional contract – has not been named by Amorim, who is widely regarded as one of the best young managers in world football.
