According to journalist Sebastien Vidal on X, United are ‘preparing’ a £61million bid for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez this summer. They are being linked with a swoop for the La Liga man. League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have also been credited with an interest.
Reporter Vidal has posted on social media: “Manchester United are preparing a £61m (€70m) bid for Fermin Lopez. Barcelona want to keep their midfielder but, facing financial issues, won’t rule out a sale if the offer arrives. Chelsea, Arsenal have also made enquiries.
Despite interest from Saudi Arabia, Chelsea and Arsenal, none made a definitive move. That has changed with United’s arrival. And while the player’s environment continues to favour staying, Barcelona are increasingly open to listening if the money is right.
“En el Barça estarían por la labor de negociar esta salida siempre que la propuesta vaya encaminada hacia los 70 millones de euros.”
For a club still operating under tight financial regulations, €70 million could unlock massive flexibility. It would be one of the biggest sales in Barça’s history and would solve immediate registration headaches, renewals and possibly create space for further incomings.
Tough Decisions and Rashford Talks
Interestingly, Fermin’s name also featured in previous meetings between United and Barça as they discussed Marcus Rashford’s future. The English forward has been a disruptive element within United’s dressing room, and the clubs maintained a fluid relationship throughout negotiations.
Despite those discussions, the operations were never officially linked. However, they did open the door for United to present a mammoth salary offer to Fermin, aiming to almost double his current earnings to entice him into making the move.
Barcelona are caught between sporting ideals and financial pragmatism. Hansi Flick and his staff rate Fermin highly, seeing him as the poster boy of La Masia’s modern success. Yet the midfield is overcrowded, and Flick reportedly would not oppose his departure if the offer exceeds expectations.
Selling a homegrown talent is never popular, but with the economic pressures at hand, this could be one of those rare occasions where logic triumphs over loyalty. And the final call, ultimately, lies with the player himself.
“La sartén por el mango la tiene el propio Fermín… al final será el propio jugador y su entorno el que acaben tomando la decisión.”
Our View – EPL Index Analysis
This feels like one of those moments where United either reset properly or miss out again. Fermin might not be a household name to the average fan just yet, but anyone who watched him last season knows he’s built differently. Intelligent runs, crisp one-touch play, an eye for goal — he has that mix of maturity and instinct that fits the Premier League’s intensity.
United fans will be buzzing at the ambition. First the Amorim hire, now €150 million spent and counting. “Y Fermín es un futbolista que encaja en el proyecto…” — that quote says it all. Ruben Amorim clearly has a style in mind and Fermin could be the beating heart of it.
From a financial perspective, this would be another bold stroke. Doubling the lad’s salary, shelling out €70 million — it screams intent. It’s also a direct challenge to the old narrative of United fumbling in the market.
