Tottenham Hotspur are making significant strides toward securing the signature of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, with the transfer window deadline approaching on Monday. The 22-year-old Dutch attacking midfielder has emerged as a top target for Spurs, who are eager to bolster their attacking options following injuries to key players like James Maddison and the departures of other targets such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze. Simons, who has been in London for crunch talks, appears to be at the center of a transfer tug-of-war between Tottenham and Chelsea, with Spurs currently holding the upper hand.

Reports indicate that Tottenham have submitted a bid in the region of €70 million, aligning with RB Leipzig’s valuation, after the German club granted Simons permission to travel to finalize his next move. Chelsea, who were initially frontrunners, have hesitated due to financial constraints and the need to balance their transfer books following a UEFA punishment. This hesitation has opened the door for Spurs, who are leveraging a strong relationship with Leipzig to push the deal forward. Simons’ arrival in London has fueled speculation, with sources suggesting positive discussions between the player’s camp and Tottenham.

Simons, a product of Barcelona’s La Masia and a standout performer at PSV and Leipzig, brings versatility and flair to the pitch, capable of playing as a No. 10 or on the wings. His recent form, despite an injury setback, includes 11 goals and 8 assists in 33 appearances for Leipzig last season. The move would mark Tottenham’s most expensive signing to date, surpassing the €145.6 million already spent this summer on players like João Palhinha and Mathys Tel. While Chelsea could still re-enter the race, Tottenham’s proactive approach and Simons’ potential desire for regular playing time give them an edge as the deadline looms.
