Better than Cristian Romero’ – Tottenham told loanee has potential to usurp World Cup winner

The Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy and supporters alike were left impressed by the club’s talented 18-year-old Croatian centre-back, Luka Vuskovic, as praise continues to mount from unexpected quarters.now reconigned as a pundit, delivered a striking prediction: Vuskovic, currently on loan at Hamburg, might not just match—but surpass—Tottenham captain and World Cup winner Cristian Romero. Speaking to football.london, Jol remarked frankly: *”Romero is a good, decent defender, but the guy they sent to Hamburg now—Luka Vuskovic—will be better.”*

Vuskovic’s journey with Spurs began in 2023 when he was signed from Hajduk Split for £12 million—but legal constraints dictated he could only join the club after turning 18. Prior to his arrival in England, he gained experience on loan in Poland and Belgium, earning high praise along the way.

Once he arrived, the teen wasted little time in making his presence noticed, scoring and assisting on his debut in a pre-season victory over Reading. But with a packed backline led by Romero and Micky van de Ven, he was sent back out on loan—for a third time—this time to Bundesliga outfit Hamburg, to secure regular first-team action.

Vuskovic remains grounded amid the hype. In comments to Germanijak, he admitted that displacing the established duo of Romero and Van de Ven won’t be easy. He acknowledged their quality and stressed the importance of consistent playing time for his own development: *“They offered me an option to stay, to play in case of injury or cup matches, but I wanted continuous minutes… A lot of work and a little luck, so I’ll be back.”*

Cristian Romero, the Argentine centerpiece, remains Tottenham’s captain and one of its most potent defensive assets. He recently agreed to a long-term deal keeping him at the club until 2029, cementing his role at the heart of Spurs’ rearguard. His aggression and leadership under manager Thomas Frank earned universal respect. Frank has emphasized Romero’s importance to the team’s core and collective mentality.

Martin Jol’s comparison may be bold, but it comes from a man known for spotting defensive talent. Luka Vuskovic is fast becoming one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders—fiery, composed, and technically mature beyond his years. While he treads the measured path of further development in Germany, many—including former Spurs figures like Jol—see a bright future that could one day see him rival, or perhaps even outshine, the decorated Cristian Romero.

In time, and with the right environment and opportunities, we may well witness Vuskovic forging his own legendary path at Tottenham.
