Anthony Gordon Responds to Alan Shearer Calling Him Out For ‘Getting Away With Murder for Years’

Anthony Gordon has finally broken his silence after Alan Shearer’s sharp criticism, where the Newcastle legend accused him of “getting away with murder for years” due to his on-field antics. Shearer, known for his blunt assessments, claimed that Gordon’s reputation for going down too easily in challenges has not been scrutinized enough, suggesting referees and pundits have often overlooked his actions.

In response, Gordon admitted he was aware of Shearer’s comments but insisted that his game has been misunderstood by critics. “I respect Alan massively; he’s a legend at this club, and his opinion carries weight,” Gordon said in a recent interview. “But I think people confuse my determination to win fouls and gain an advantage for simulation or exaggeration. I play with intensity, I push defenders, and I’m always looking to make something happen. That sometimes means I’m fouled more than others.”

The winger went on to defend his style of play, highlighting that modern football requires players to be clever in how they draw challenges. “It’s about being smart,” Gordon explained. “If I feel contact, I’m not going to stay on my feet and risk losing the ball. That’s just the reality of the game now. Every top forward in the Premier League does the same.”

While some Newcastle supporters sided with Shearer, arguing Gordon needs to mature and focus more on end product rather than theatrics, others applauded the 23-year-old’s willingness to fight back against criticism. Many fans also pointed to his improved statistics this season — including goals, assists, and pressing numbers — as proof that his contribution goes beyond any supposed diving reputation.

For Gordon, the debate seems to be part of a broader effort to prove himself at St. James’ Park. “I’m working hard every day to make a difference for Newcastle,” he concluded. “People can say what they like, but my focus is on winning games for this club.”

Whether Shearer’s words will push Gordon to refine his approach or simply harden his resolve remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the conversation around his playing style is unlikely to fade any time soon.
