Alan Shearer Criticizes Alexander Isak for Forcing a Move to Liverpool

Alan Shearer, Newcastle United’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most respected voices in English football, has not held back in his criticism of Alexander Isak following the striker’s controversial transfer to Liverpool. The Swedish forward, who had been Newcastle’s record signing and a central figure in Eddie Howe’s project, sealed a big-money move to Anfield after refusing to play for the Magpies during the final weeks of the transfer saga.

Shearer, speaking as both a pundit and a Newcastle legend, described Isak’s conduct as “a really bad look for football.” His main frustration was not that Isak chose to leave – players come and go in modern football – but the manner in which the transfer was pushed through. By refusing to play while under contract, Isak undermined his obligations to both his teammates and the fans who had backed him since his arrival in 2022.

“When you sign a contract, you should honour it,” Shearer stressed. “Isak is a great player going to a great football club, but the way he’s gone about it is totally wrong.” His comments reflect a growing concern among football traditionalists that player power has tilted the balance too far, allowing top stars to dictate terms regardless of contractual commitments.

Shearer also criticised the role of Isak’s representatives, questioning the advice given to the 25-year-old striker. He suggested that the lack of a release clause in Isak’s long-term deal at Newcastle left the player frustrated, and instead of handling the situation professionally, he resorted to refusing to play in order to force the move.

For Newcastle fans, the transfer is particularly bitter. They had embraced Isak as a future star who could lead the club into Europe consistently. Instead, the episode leaves a sense of betrayal and highlights the challenges that ambitious clubs face in retaining their best talent.

While Liverpool supporters will welcome Isak’s arrival with excitement, Shearer’s comments serve as a reminder that football is not only about goals and trophies but also about professionalism and respect for the game.
