The new sporting director has kicked off his role at St James’ Park with transfer strategy a key part of his remit
Newcastle United finally have their boardroom hierarchy in place with the target of taking the club to the next level. David Hopkinson’s appointment as CEO was followed by Ross Wilson’s arrival as sporting director as the Magpies look to their continue their rapid development under their Saudi-backed owners.
Wilson’s appointment will see a fresh impetus when it comes to transfer strategy and long-term goals on the playing-side of the club, with the former Nottingham Forest and Rangers man already holding high-level talks with head coach Eddie Howe.
He took in training this week, but his remit will include future transfer windows, with the United head coach having to take on much of the burden himself in the summer following Paul Mitchell’s exit.
Kobbie Mainoo
The young midfielder looks set to leave Manchester United, either in January or in the summer transfer window, with the Red Devils keen on a £60m deal to sign Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
Mainoo almost moved on last summer but wanted to fight for his place at Old Trafford. However, he has not had the chances he would have liked under Ruben Amorim, and could be sold in the near future.
Newcastle could be in the market for more midfield options, and he ticks the boxes of their transfer blueprint in that he is young, English and has Premier League experience. They won’t be alone if they pursue interest in the England international.
Josh King
Newcastle have kept an eye on the progress of the Fulham star who is enjoying a breakthrough season under Marco Silva at Craven Cottage.
United have watched the 18-year-old, who can play in a variety of roles, something which would appeal to Eddie Howe and Co.
Marc Guehi
As Lee Ryder reported this week, United have not entirely given up on the idea of signing England defender Guehi from Crystal Palace, who will be out of contract next summer.
Liverpool thought they had sealed a deal on deadline day, only for Palace to pull the plug, and while Arne Slot will be back in for the 25-year-old, so will several other sides.
He could have his pick of where to move, but Newcastle will make sure they are in the mix.
Igor Thiago
One who has been on chief scout Steve Nickson’s radar for some time, Thiago has finally moved on from injury issues to show what he can do with Brentford.
Aged just 24, he’s one Newcastle will continue to monitor this season, with the Brazilian offering pace and height. United spent big on Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa this year, but could yet make another move to increase their forward options.
Elliot Anderson
Many would love to see the Geordie midfielder return to St James’ Park, after United reluctantly sold him to Forest in 2024 to meet PSR requirements. Wilson had a hand in that deal and could win instant approval from United fans by bringing Anderson back to Tyneside.
However, Man City and Chelsea are said to be intereted in the England midfielder, and could make a £75m move for the Whitley Bay-born rising star.
