Roy Keane named the one Newcastle legend he believes he is actually underrated

Roy Keane recently shared his thoughts on various football personalities and players. When it comes to Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, Keane expressed that he never had admiration for the player, citing Shearer’s tendency to use “sneaky elbows” on opponents. This sentiment stems from their intense rivalry during their playing days, particularly the infamous incident where Keane was sent off at St James’ Park in 2001 after reacting to Shearer’s attempt to waste time.¹

However, Keane has been vocal about his appreciation for other Newcastle players. He praised Jacob Murphy, describing him as “amazing” over the last six to twelve months. Murphy’s impressive form, including eight goals and eleven assists in the Premier League this season, has caught Keane’s attention. According to Keane, Murphy has “peaked at the right time,” making him a valuable asset to the Magpies.

Keane also commended Alexander Isak for his exceptional goal-scoring ability and Anthony Gordon for his potential. Nevertheless, he believes Gordon needs to step up his game to secure his place in the England squad. Additionally, Keane has expressed admiration for Newcastle’s recruitment efforts under Eddie Howe, highlighting the impact of new signings like Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes.² ³ ⁴

While Keane’s opinions might be influenced by his past experiences and rivalries, his insights provide valuable perspectives on the players and teams competing in the Premier League. His praise for certain Newcastle players underscores their hard work and dedication, which have contributed significantly to the team’s success this season.
