Liverpool central defender Joe Gomez is the subject of interest from Premier League rivals as we enter the final stages of the summer transfer window
Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez’s future remains a topic of hot conversation in the summer transfer window with less than a fortnight before deadline day. The Englishman arrived at Anfield as a hot prospect in 2015 from Charlton Athletic.
Since moving up to Merseyside, Gomez has made 224 appearances for the Reds and shown his versatility throughout that time too. He has featured at centre-back and right-back primarily as well as left-back when needed.
Last season, Gomez made 32 Premier League appearances for the club but only completed a full 90 minutes on 12 occasions. This lack of game time and a change of manager in the summer has led to question marks surrounding his future.
Liverpool decision
Gomez did not travel with the Liverpool squad this afternoon for the clash with Ipswich Town. The ECHO understands the 27-year-old is exploring his options away from Anfield before the window closes on Friday, August 30.
Who is interested?
According to The Times, there are a flurry of clubs interested in bringing Gomez to their clubs. Aston Villa, Fulham and Chelsea are thought to be keen on the defender as well as several clubs abroad.
However, it is Premier League rivals Newcastle United who have gotten the closest to signing Gomez this summer.
Gordon/Gomez swap
While Newcastle were struggling to abide by the Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, Eddie Howe’s men attempted to complete an audacious swap deal which would see Gomez join them for £45m and Anthony Gordon moving back to Merseyside for £75m.
However, the Magpies managed to complete a deal for academy players which helped them avoid having to sell Gordon.
Where do Newcastle stand now?
Howe is likely to still be interested in Gomez as they are currently embroiled in a saga to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. Newcastle have had four bids, the latest valued at as much as £70m, rejected by Palace so could move their interest away from him to go after Gomez.
The Magpies know that a bid of £45m with Gordon coming the other way could be enough to solve their defender issues.
