West Ham made nine signings during the summer window and one of them already wants to stay at the club for years to come.
There is no denying West Ham had one of the best windows of any club in the Premier League.
It was sorely needed too with Julen Lopetegui inheriting what was the smallest squad in the top flight.
Many have labelled West Ham’s summer window the club’s best ever.
It is certainly right up there.
But many Hammers fans feels one or two elements mean it just falls short of being a 10/10 job by technical director Tim Steidten.
Striker was one of – if not the – key positions which needed addressing in the summer.
Especially after Gianluca Scamacca was not replaced last year.
The signing of Niclas Fullkrug has divided opinion among some West Ham fans.
Some Hammers fans raise short-termism concerns
Despite the German’s pedigree, many feel his age and lack of pace will count against him in the world’s toughest and quickest league.
So the failure to sign a younger, pacy forward to compete with Fullkrug has been seen as a small negative on West Ham’s window.
It is also felt that some of the arrivals are short-term in their thinking.
Guido Rodriguez came in on a free and has been excellent. But he was only signed on a two-year deal.
Fullkrug turns 32 this season too.
Jean-Clair Todibo sign on loan – but fans were relieved to discover his obligation clause will kick in after five Premier League starts.
Creativity has been a big problem for the Hammers. It is one of the reasons why strikers continually struggle in east London.
Soler already wants to stay at West Ham many years longer
Midfield ace Carlos Soler became signing number nine when he came in on loan from PSG.
A journalist claimed Soler would in fact be signing a two-year loan with West Ham having an obligation to buy.
But when the deal was announced by West Ham and PSG it was stated it is for a single season and there was no mention of an obligation or option to buy.
Fans, particularly of ambitious Premier League clubs, hate nothing more than having a player on loan with no end game or prospect of the deal becoming permanent.
The short-termism is frowned upon by most fans.
But the top class new West Ham signing says he already wants to stay many years longer.
Soler was a star at Valencia before being hoovered up by PSG during their drive to sign the top emerging talents from every league.
That blueprint has had mixed results for the French club and they have now changed their recruitment philosophy to focus on top French talent first.
That has worked well for West Ham as it means they have been able to sign Soler while Man United have benefitted by getting Manuel Ugarte.
But what if Soler does brilliantly well and Hammers fans are desperate to see him stay?
Well the good news is the 27-year-old sounds like he would definitely be keen.
Soler says it has always been his dream since a young child to move to the Premier League.
Now he has realised that dream with West Ham.
And he says he wants to emulate his compatriot and friend Pablo Fornals by being idolised and staying at the London Stadium for many years.
Pablo was here for years and hopefully I can repeat his success’
“It always has been an ambition of mine to play in the Premier League,” Soler told West Ham’s website.
“I have dreamed since I was a kid to play here, and West Ham are a big club in the Premier League.
“I think it is the best league in the world…
“I’ve spoken with Pablo Fornals, and he has told me that this club is one of the biggest in the Premier League, so let’s have a big season.
“He is an idol here and spent four-and-a-half seasons at West Ham. Hopefully, I can repeat his success.
“I’m so excited (to be working with Lopetegui). I spoke with him two or three times before I arrived here, and I want to play for his team and West Ham United.”
In West Ham’s favour is the fact PSG, like the rest of the clubs across Europe, are having to be more prudent and cut their cloth accordingly when it comes to transfers.
The top spokesman inside the club told Hammers News last week that West Ham’s owners felt Soler was being “overpriced” by PSG.
It was reported the Ligue 1 champions were holding out for around £17-20m.
The hope between now and the end of the season will be that negotiations free from the pressure of a looming transfer deadline will lead to a reasonable compromise.
