West Ham board decide on Lopetegui sack – Fabrizio Romano

Fabrizio Romano reveals West Ham United board decision on sacking Julen Lopetegui

West Ham United’s board have instructed Julen Lopetegui to deliver immediate change as speculation around a potential sacking swirls, according to Fabrizio Romano.

As reported in the journalist’s Daily Briefing [26 September], those overseeing Lopetegui’s progress want to see results improve as soon as possible after a considerable summer of change among the playing and coaching staff.

! Huge Lopetegui SACK update at West Ham

The Hammers sit 14th in the Premier League table with just one win from five, and were thrashed 5-1 in the Carabao Cup by Liverpool in midweek.

Romano said: “Although some reports say Julen Lopetegui has three games to save his job, I’ve no confirmation on that.

“For sure the West Ham hierarchy wants to see a change in results as soon as possible. Lopetegui knows that.

“It’s been a poor start to the season but the club understands they changed many players, new staff… so it can take time. But now results are needed.”

How long does Julen Lopetegui have at West Ham?

It would be hugely naive, first and foremost, from the club’s board if they were to dispense with Lopetegui too hastily.

With a huge overhaul in the operations of the club including the Spaniard’s installation as a head coach after David Moyes’ long tenure, Tim Steidten led the recruitment charge and handed his new man a very new-look squad.

Having played just five league games, Lopetegui does not yet know his best team and has been criticised by sections of the fanbase for his selections, with several new signings starved of significant playing time after heavy investments were made.

It could be the case that the team is reshuffled ahead of the weekend’s trip to Brentford, with the Irons having conceded eight goals in the past five days.

While it would achieve very little to consider replacing the experienced coach at this stage, there will certainly be a watchful eye on progress in the coming weeks.
