Jamie O’Hara reacts to ‘Shocking’ incident at Everton after caller live on talkSPORT
Everton not being awarded a penalty against Newcastle on 5 October was a “shocking decision”, Jamie O’Hara has said.
Speaking on talkSPORT with Jason Cundy (10:18pm), O’Hara slammed a Newcastle fan who had called into the station, saying the Magpies got lucky not to concede a penalty at Goodison Park.
Dan Burn’s clumsy challenge on Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box was not penalised by either the on-field referee or VAR, after Jordan Pickford had already saved a spot-kick from Anthony Gordon.
O’Hara said to the caller: “(Newcastle) got away with one against Everton as well, shocking decision from the referee. Dan Burn – all-ends-up penalty.”
Everton one decision away from statement Newcastle victory
Goodison Park was a powder keg on Saturday (5 October) evening as Newcastle arrived in town, and the outcome of a hard-fought 0-0 draw was decided with refereeing decisions made in both penalty boxes.
The vitriol in the Gladwys Street End grew to palpable levels as former Toffees academy starlet Gordon stepped up from 12 yards, with Pickford’s brilliant save to keep the game scoreless proving a highlight.
On social media, the Blues have been criticised for their reaction to the save but had Burn flying through the back of Calvert-Lewin also been dealt with accordingly, attention would have been turned elsewhere.
Calvert-Lewin may have only found the net twice in seven games so far this season, but everyone inside Goodison would have backed him to score the penalty they believed he should have won.
Alas, the game remained at 0-0 as the Blues saw Newcastle out to claim a valuable point, but had they been given, and scored, their spot-kick, the mood on Merseyside would have been one of jubilation.
