Newcastle’s top signing priority revealed – sources

Newcastle won’t prioritise a striker signing in January and will look to strengthen elsewhere, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Newcastle will prioritise signing new a right-winger over a new striker in the coming January transfer window.

The club had attempted to bring in a new winger over the summer but shifted focus to a deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, which ultimately failed.

Both Alexander Isak, 25, and Callum Wilson, 32, struggled for form before being sidelined with toe and back injuries, ruling them out until the end of October.

Eddie Howe’s side would only consider entering the market for a new striker if Callum Wilson were to leave, but they are reluctant to do so without securing a replacement first.

Newcastle not urgently looking for a new striker

The Tyneside club are currently the Premier League’s joint seventh-lowest goalscorers with just eight from their first seven games.

Despite ending last season as the league’s third-highest goalscorer, behind Cole Palmer and Erling Haaland with 21, Isak has only scored one in his five games so far.

Wilson is yet to play a single minute for Newcastle this season after suffering yet another injury setback, after missing 28 games with various injuries last season.

The two strikers remain at Darsley Park throughout the international break, with the club set to play Brighton upon their return.
