Dele Alli returned to Everton training in December following a lengthy absence but picked up another injury soon after.
It has been over a year since Dele Alli played a competitive game of football.
Since making a 45-minute cameo for Besiktas in a 0-0 draw against Antalyaspor in February 2022, the former England international has been incredibly unfortunate with injuries.
His season-loan deal at the Turkish club came to an end in April after he needed surgery to repair a tendon injury. He was, however, close to returning for Everton’s pre-season campaign.
But the midfielder has since picked up further setbacks, including surgery on his groin last month. It’s been a frustrating spell on the sidelines for Alli but positive news could be on the horizon.
A report from The Athletic suggests Alli is making positive progress as he works his way through a rehabilitation programme, and is eager to repay the faith shown in him.

In fact, Everton are clearly optimistic about his future, with the club being ‘open’ to handing him a new deal – although clarity will ‘almost certainly’ have to wait until the summer.
Alli, who bravely opened up on his mental health struggles in July, has been working hard to make a return. In fact, he has been contributing to on-field matters as a makeshift coach at Finch Farm, according to Sean Dyche.
“I don’t think he would mind me sharing that there probably was a period when (his career) was drifting for him,” Dyche said in November.
“He had a lot going on. Once that came out, it has allowed him the chance to focus on his football and he has been very involved in terms of absorbing.
“He can’t get out on the grass with us yet but he is looking at it and he is absorbing what the input from myself and the staff has been.
“He is clear-minded now. It was very difficult what he was going through, of course. We know that. But he is very willing to share, give an opinion.”

Dyche added: “It’s a case of us having a coffee in the canteen. You’ll say: ‘Hey, Dele, how is it going? What are your thoughts?’ He’ll point out little things. ‘I thought that, I thought this.’
“It’s just a natural combination where we like players to share a view. It’s a nice knock-on effect that you can share something with the group. You can say: ‘I was chatting with Dele the other day and he said this really important thing.’
“We were clear-minded when we were talking about direct football – not just kicking the ball forward.

“He said it was very similar to when Pochettino first went in at Tottenham. He used to talk about it all the time. He seems to me to be very secure in himself. “He’s more than happy to share what he is thinking. These are amazing things he’s experienced. People, sometimes, lose sight of that.”

The midfielder is determined to play for England again.
Dele Alli has a daily reminder set on his phone that speaks volumes about his determination to play at the highest level again.
The former MK Dons and Spurs midfielder, who hasn’t played a competitive game of football since February 2023, is currently a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Everton.
That being said, the Toffees have allowed Alli to train at Finch Farm this summer as he steps up his recovery from injury.
Everton manager Sean Dyche recently gave an update on Alli’s situation. “He’s just making sure he’s right,” Dyche said. “He’s had a little bit of a slip back with his fitness so he is just in that total recovery period.”
Depending on the progress of his comeback, it is said Everton are open to handing the 28-year-old a new deal, although Ligue 1 side Lille are also interested in his signature, according to the Daily Mail.

Alli is determined to get back to his best. Speaking on Monday Night Football in April, the midfielder opened up on his ambition to play for England at the 2026 World Cup.
Having made several appearances at U17 and U18 level, Alli collected an impressive 37 caps for England between 2015 and 2019, where he played in Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup.
“I spoke about it in my interview and don’t want to go over it too much again – but I know my level as a player and what I can get to,” he told Sky Sports.
“I know how good I can be when my head is in the right place and I’m feeling good. Obviously I’m disappointed with the injury right now but I’m excited to get playing.
“It’s hard for me to even watch football. It’s been tough for me, I’d say, this past eight months has been hard to watch.”

Alli then touched on his decision to set a daily reminder on his phone for 11am.
He added: “You know you can set reminders on your phone, I have a reminder at 11 o’clock every day that says, ‘World Cup 2026’. That’s my aim for now. I think that people will be like, ‘he hasn’t played in a year’ but I don’t care, I know my level.
“The only target I have is the World Cup right now. Obviously I’m injured and contracted to Everton and so my mind is just about taking it day by day and making sure my injury is healed and that I’m in the best possible condition after the summer.”

Everton ‘turn down’ an offer from Tottenham to restructure Dele Alli transfer
Everton have rejected Tottenham’s proposal.
Everton have turned down Tottenham’s proposal to alter the terms of Dele Alli’s contract, according to a report.
Dele joined the Goodison Park outfit on a free transfer, but the deal included clauses relating to the performances of the player and the team, which could be worth as much as £30 million.
Per the clauses, Everton would have to pay Spurs £10 million when the 27-year-old registered 20 appearances for the club.
However, according to The Times, the North London side have made an offer to reduce the fee to £8 million in exchange for reducing the required number of games, making a payment to Spurs more likely while easing the financial burden on Everton.
But the Toffees have rejected Spurs’ offer, though they are also keen to make amendments to the structure of the payment, which would be due after Dele makes 20 appearances.
The pair of Premier League clubs remain in discussions over the clause as they are both open to renegotiating the deal.
It’s believed Everton and Spurs are keen to come to a conclusion in a bid to help Dele to revive his career.
The former England international has played 13 games for Everton across two seasons since his move, so he’s seven games away from triggering the payment to Spurs.

Dele, who spent time away from England last season on loan at Besiktas, is close to resuming full training.
Speaking on Wednesday, Sean Dyche said: “He is going well. He is back on the grass with the sports science fitness side, going through football-related drills, but the actual freedom to come and join in with us is not there yet.
“Hopefully over the next week he will start slowly blending in. He still has a bit to go because he has been out for a long time. But to get him back with us would be really pleasing for him because he has been so unlucky.”
