Jamie Carragher claims Everton once had the best goalkeeper of all time in their squad

Everton have been able to turn a corner in the Premier League after extending their unbeaten run on the weekend with a draw against Fulham.

Sean Dyche’s side have been able to pull five points clear of the relegation zone with their improved run of form.

However, Dyche has commented on Everton’s poor start which saw them open their Premier League account with four straight defeats.

But it has not always been this way at Everton with the Toffees once one of the English powerhouses having won numerous league and FA Cup titles.

And there is one player from that generation which Jamie Carragher has admitted he thinks is the best to ever do it in his position.

Speaking to The Overlap, Carragher was quizzed on who he thinks is the current best and greatest-ever player in certain positions.

When asked who he thought was the current best goalkeeper he said Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois.

However, the former Liverpool defender credited Everton legend Neville Southall with the title of the best-ever goalkeeper.

The now 66-year-old played a staggering 674 times for the Toffees and won multiple honours during his time on Merseyside including:

England’s number one goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will appreciate Carragher’s praise of Southall having also waxed lyrical about the Everton legend.

After inking his latest contract last year, Pickford spoke to BBC Sport about building his own legacy on Merseyside in the way which Southall was able to.

“This contract will take me to more than 10 years at Everton and I want to build a legacy here to put myself up there with the likes of Neville Southall to be one of the best keepers to have played for Everton,” he said.

Pickford may not be challenging for titles with Everton but the former Sunderland shot stopper has played a huge role in keeping the Toffees afloat in the top flight over recent years.

And even despite his recent struggles for England, Dyche has backed Pickford to lead Everton forward even during their own issues earlier in the season.
