Everton missed out on signing free agent in 2023, now he’s just made Champions League history

Everton have seen some serious players escape their grasp over recent years in the transfer window.

David Moyes may have been left slightly disappointed by only seeing one new face come through the doors during the January transfer window.

The Friedkin Group wanted two new signings last month, but the club was once again hindered by PSR despite the change of ownership.

However, the ship has been steadied at Everton who look well on track to take Premier League football into their new stadium.

The summer window is expected to be busy for Everton, but for now the Toffees may be left rueing previous transfer attempts which passed them by.

And there has been one player Everton were interested in a few years ago that has just broken a Champions League record on Wednesday night.

Everton wanted to sign Ivan Perisic in 2022

Idrissa Gana Gueye has dreams of playing European football with Everton over the coming years, following a bright start under Moyes.

One player who is still shining in Europe is Ivan Perisic, a player who Everton were keen to sign just a matter of years ago.

According to Spanish media, Everton were one of the sides eyeing up the Croatia international when in 2021.

The Toffees were keeping tabs on Perisic ahead of his contract running out in 2022 with Inter Milan.

He was ultimately snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur, where he went on to have his issues with injuries, which cost him his time in north London.

Perisic now finds himself playing for PSV Eindhoven following his exit from Spurs and Hajduk Split.

And he has continued to show his quality with a return of six goals and eight assists across all competitions.

Ivan Perisic makes Champions League history

On Wednesday night, PSV Eindhoven knocked out Juventus in the Champions League.

Everton January target Timothy Weah scored for the visitors, but it was the Dutch outfit who have progressed in the competition.

But it was Perisic who stole the show with yet another goal for the Eredivisie outfit after scoring in the first leg over in Turin.

Perisic became the oldest-ever player to score in both legs of a Champions League knockout tie on Wednesday night.

Despite enduring his struggles with Tottenham, the 36-year-old’s quality is still there for all to see at the highest level.
