New report identifies Bruno Guimaraes as ‘major target’ for Manchester City this summer

It was only a matter of time before the future of Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes came back into question.

Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with a move away from Newcastle many times, and that speculation hit fever pitch when it was revealed that he’d had a £100 million release clause inserted into the new contract he signed in October 2023.

The reports were true, Bruno did have a £100 million release clause in his contract, but it was active for a very brief period and before the new PSR reporting period kicked in, meaning that only clubs with £100 million of headroom left in their budget could activate it.

Unsurprisingly, the release clause period came and went without any fuss and for a while, the talk of Bruno leaving Newcastle died down.
There had been the odd rumble about Pep Guardiola looking to sign Bruno in January as a replacement for the injured Rodri, but that was more media-driven than anything else with Manchester City opting for Nico Gonzalez instead.

However, Give Me Sport is now reporting that Pep will be given the green light to spend big in the summer, and Bruno Guimaraes could be back on the menu for Man City.

The report acknowledges that it won’t be an easy deal to get done as he still has three years left on his current deal and Newcastle have already spoken about not allowing their big stars to leave this summer.
We don’t see Bruno wanting to leave Newcastle for a while

We don’t see Bruno going anywhere just yet. He has big dreams of winning silverware for this club, and even if Newcastle do lift a trophy this season, it’ll only make him hungry for more.

Bruno is an adopted Geordie and is very settled. There will be a time when he moves on, there’s no doubt about that, but we’ll get another season out of him at least.

That being said, there’s always this feeling around the club that we’re going to have to let one of our big players go for a big sum, and out of Bruno, Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali, it would be Bruno for us. We’ve obviously got nothing against our captain, but Sandro is coming on leaps and bounds and is a ready-made replacement, whereas we would struggle to find a replacement for the others.
