_LINEKER AND SHEARER SLAM “RIDICULOUS” CELEBRATIONS, CALL FOR RULE CHANGE AFTER EVERTON-LIVERPOOL CLASH_
Football legends Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have joined forces to condemn the “ridiculous” celebrations that marred Everton’s recent match against Liverpool, and are calling for a rule change to ban time-wasting and provocative celebrations in front of opposing fans.
The pair, who were commentating on the match for BBC’s Match of the Day, were left fuming by the antics of some Liverpool players, who celebrated in front of the Everton fans after scoring, and engaged in time-wasting tactics to run down the clock.
“That was ridiculous,” Lineker said. “The celebrations in front of the Everton fans were unnecessary and provocative. It’s not what we want to see in the game.”
Shearer agreed, adding: “It’s not just the celebrations, it’s the time-wasting as well. Players are taking an age to take throw-ins and goal kicks, and it’s killing the game. Something needs to be done about it.”
The pair are calling for the introduction of a new rule that would ban players from celebrating in front of opposing fans, and would penalize teams for time-wasting.
“It’s simple,” Lineker said. “If a player celebrates in front of the opposing fans, they should be yellow-carded. And if a team is guilty of time-wasting, they should be penalized with a free kick or even a penalty.”
Shearer added: “It’s not about spoiling the fun of the game, it’s about respecting the opposition and the fans. We need to clean up the game and make it more respectful.”
The debate has sparked a heated discussion among football fans, with some agreeing with Lineker and Shearer, while others argue that celebrations are a natural part of the game.
