Newcastle United and Callum Wilson have failed to agree terms on a fresh contract.
Newcastle United and Callum Wilson are reportedly set to part ways after failing to agree a fresh contract.
The 33-year-old’s deal expired last week but he had been given a fresh proposal on reduced terms. It is understood the offer was an incentivised contract given Wilson’s changing role at St James’ Park.
Signed as the dead-cert goalscorer Newcastle lacked under Steve Bruce, the England international claimed the iconic No.9 shirt in his second season. Wilson scored important goals for the Magpies but always faced questions over his injury record.
The striker missed almost 40 per cent of Newcastle’s Premier League games since joining the club in September 2020. Alexander Isak’s emergence into one of the world’s leading forward has also diminished Wilson’s importance.
Fabrizio Romano confirms exit
A trusted lieutenant of Eddie Howe lieutenant, it was hoped Wilson would continue on Tyneside but he is now set to move on. Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Wilson – who scored 49 goals in black-and-white stripes – has confirmed his decision.
“Understand it’s over between Callum Wilson and Newcastle, decision made with formal confirmation to follow,” he wrote on social media. “Wilson will soon say goodbye to NUFC staff, fans and teammates as he’s not staying at the club with contract now expired.”
‘I’m comfortable’ – Callum Wilson
Speaking to The Rest Is Football podcast, Wilson recently expressed calmness over his Newcastle future. He said: “I’m comfortable now. Financially, thankfully, I’m stable so that’s not an issue. I know I’m still able to provide for my family and put food on the table for them.
“I know my worth and I know my value and I’m still so hungry inside that even though I know Alex is scoring goals, I’m still frustrated when the team sheet comes out and I’m not starting so I know I’m not ready to leave football yet.
“I’d love to leave football before football leaves me. I’d never let an injury stop me from playing. I think I’ve been fit now for four-and-a-half months but I’ve probably only played 250 or 300 minutes and that side of things is frustrating because you don’t want the last few years of your career to fizzle away from you, especially when you’re worked so hard to get to that point.
“It’s all new for me at the moment but I’m just enjoying life, enjoying football and playing with a smile on my face. What’s meant to be will be.”
Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson
Howe neither confirmed nor denied Wilson’s exit when grilled by the media after the final-day defeat to Everton. Asked apparent the striker’s apparent post-match farewell, the Toon boss said: “Let’s wait and see. We’re going to sit down and talk with his representatives.
“What I can say is that Callum Wilson is, and has been, an incredible footballer for Newcastle. He’s someone who epitomises the spirit that has got us to where we are.
“He’s professional, brave – to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment he did, it was a difficult moment in the club’s history. The club needed hope – and Callum gave them hope. He dealt with the pressure and responsibility that role brings unbelievably well.
“He brings a positivity to the group, he’s a leader within the changing room, he’s just been incredible. Let’s wait and see what happens, but it was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There’s still so much respect there between the two.”
