Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has lifted the lid on the Magpies’ transfer struggles this summer – and admits the sole signing of Anthony Elanga does not represent the efforts of the backroom team after a summer long search for new stars.
Howe, speaking for the first time this summer and reflecting on the exit of sporting director Paul Mitchell, has overseen United’s training camp in Austria this week.
And he will guide his team to their first public friendly at Parkhead against Scottish Premiership side champions Celtic on Saturday afternoon.
Talking to the club’s official TV channel, Howe, asked if he’d been able to switch off, said: “It was probably quite a difficult summer for that (switching off) with everything that was going on behind the scenes.
“Obviously, losing Paul (Mitchell) and all of the dynamics are changing within because the sporting director is such a pivotal role at the club. So I think there was a lot to pick up.”

Newcastle are yet to replace former Monaco supremo Mitchell while a decision on CEO Darren Eales’ replacement is also yet to be made behind the scenes.
Howe said: “There has been a lot of work transfer-wise, for very little incoming-wise, even though we are delighted to get Anthony Elanga in, of course.
“We are delighted to get him in. But a lot more work behind the scenes for preparation for the new season.”
Newcastle could hand a debut to Elanga in Glasgow tomorrow with the team jetting straight into the city’s East End.
“It will be a sight that the 10,000 travelling Geordies will be keen to see after a summer of false starts in the transfer window.
