The new Premier League season is edging closer as Newcastle United and their rivals step up their preparations.

For the Magpies, it’s another season that involves the excitement of Champions League football being back at St James’ Park. To cope with the demands of the competition as well as the gruelling Premier League schedule, Eddie Howe will hope to add to his squad in the current transfer window.

There have so far been two new arrivals at the club this summer. Young winger Antonito Cordero has signed on a free transfer from Malaga, while Anthony Elanga completed an initial £52 million move from Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

There has been a lot of talk over possible comings and goings over the last few days and weeks, with some concentration on Liverpool’s interest in Alexander Isak and Newcastle target Hugo Ekitike.

As we go further into the window, we’ve taken a look at a couple of the most recent stories from in and around St James’ Park and given our thoughts on the situation.

Newcastle open transfer pathway

Newcastle have announced the appointment of Sidarshan Gopaladeik as the club’s new technical director. He will take up a role reporting to the next sporting director, who is yet to be appointed in what is a newly-created position.

Gopaladeik joins from Italian side Atalanta, where he was director of football intelligence. At Newcastle he will lead the club’s football data operations, involving performance, medical, analysis, methodology and recruitment to implement data-informed practices.

ChronLive says: While his sole concentration won’t be on recruitment, the appointment of Gopaladeik could potentially open up a transfer pathway for Newcastle United to Atalanta, with him knowing the players well.

One Atalanta player who has been linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer is defender Giorgio Scalvini. The appointment could, in theory, open up lines of communication between the clubs to help make a move happen

Livramento

United are planning on offering Tino Livramento a bumper new deal to ward off any interest in the full-back this summer, according to the Times.

Livramento has been a key player for Eddie Howe’s side since maing the move from Southamptin two years ago. He has been linked with a move to Manchester City this summer.

However, it is reported that Newcastle are ready to offer the player a new six-year deal which will make him one of the club’s top earners. After missing the game against Celtic through being given extra time off, Livramento is expected to be involved in Sunday’s clash against Arsenal in Singapore.

ChronLive says: Newcastle have shown that they are no pushovers when it comes to other clubs showing interest in their players. They look to have – for now at least – seen off interest from Liverpool in Alexander Isak.

Getting Livramento on a new long-term deal with the club will be another step towards securing the futures of the club’s most valuable assets. It will be a big boost to Howe and his side if it is signed.
