Howe Addresses Isak Speculation: “Whatever Happens Has to Be Right for Newcastle”
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has publicly responded to the swirling reports surrounding Alexander Isak’s future, acknowledging “things are going on behind the scenes” but reiterating that any decision regarding the Swedish striker “has to be right for the football club.”
Isak’s absence from Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia, initially cited as a minor thigh injury, was quickly overshadowed by claims that the 25-year-old had expressed a desire to explore a move away from St. James’ Park. Premier League champions Liverpool have been heavily linked, with talks of a potential British record transfer fee.
Speaking from Singapore ahead of Newcastle’s friendly against Arsenal, Howe struck a measured tone. “Of course, there are always going to be things going on behind the scenes,” he told reporters. “He is aware he’s in the news every day, which I’m sure is not easy for anyone in that situation. Conversations between Alex and the club or with me will stay private for obvious reasons. We do share a good relationship.”
Howe was quick to praise Isak’s contributions since his arrival in 2022. “He’s been magnificent for us and he’s very popular in the dressing room. We’d love him to continue his journey at Newcastle.”
Despite the ongoing speculation, Howe maintained a stance of confidence regarding Isak’s immediate future. “I said [last weekend after the Celtic game] I was confident that he’d stay. I don’t see anything that is going to change that opinion of mine at the moment.” However, he also added a caveat: “It’s football, and who knows what the future may bring.”
Crucially, Howe confirmed that no new contract talks are currently taking place with Isak, whose current deal runs until 2028. “As far as I’m aware, I don’t think there are any contract talks taking place at the moment. That’ll be for a later date potentially.”
The manager emphasized Newcastle’s strong financial position, hinting that the club will not be forced into a sale. “Whatever happens has to be right for Newcastle. We are in a very strong position financially and are determined to be successful.”
The coming weeks will undoubtedly be tense for Newcastle fans as the transfer window progresses. While Howe remains hopeful, the public acknowledgment of Isak’s apparent desire to explore options means the club faces a significant challenge in retaining one of its most valuable assets as they prepare for a demanding season, including Champions League football.
