Alexander Isak was linked with a sensational big-money move to Chelsea over the weekend
Alan Shearer would be “angry and disappointed” if Newcastle United sold Alexander Isak this summer.
Reports have claimed Chelsea are interested in signing the Swede, with the Magpies hamstrung by FFP/PSR restrictions. Toon chiefs were worried about breaching the balance sheet limit before the July 30 deadline.
With owners worth a cool £700billion, this has reignited the debate about whether FFP/PSR is fit for purpose. Newcastle are also debt-free but must get creative to comply with current legislation.
The Daily Mail also claimed Anthony Gordon may move to Liverpool given the economic backdrop – further infuriating Toon fans. Isak – who bagged 25 goals last season – has already outlined his desire to stay on Tyneside earlier this year.
“I’m enjoying myself very, very much in Newcastle,” he told reporters. “I just had the best season of my career. That should not be underestimated.
“I love everything really about the club, the fans, the city. I actually have no thoughts of a move or anything like that. I enjoy myself fantastically well and am very happy with my life.”
However, the situation may be taken out of Isak’s hands if the Magpies receive a seismic offer. Newcastle would likely demand around £150million – a fee out of Chelsea’s reach – for their club-record arrival.
But Toon icon Shearer does not expect Isak to leave, predicting outrage if the Saudi-backed owners were to cash in. Selling the 24-year-old would trigger scenes reminiscent of when Newcastle offloaded Andy Cole in January 1996.
“I’m not that worried,” he told Betfair. “I don’t think he’ll leave. I don’t think it can happen. Newcastle supporters would go mad if it happened. With what he’s brought to Newcastle and how good a player he is, I’m not sure Chelsea could afford him either.
“I’ve seen the reports and I don’t think there’s anything in that at all. I’d be amazed, angry and disappointed if he left Newcastle.”
