Alan Shearer selects his greatest England players of all time and named surprise Newcastle’s legend as the greatest England player ever

# Alan Shearer’s Dream England XI: A Blend of Legends and Personal Heroes

In a fascinating revelation, former England captain and prolific goalscorer Alan Shearer has unveiled his all-time greatest England XI, a team that marries World Cup heroes with modern stalwarts and even includes himself in the lineup. Speaking to Coral back in 2018, Shearer crafted this dream side under the management of his former boss, Sir Bobby Robson, whom he chose over 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey for personal reasons—having played under Robson during his international career. The formation? A classic 4-4-2, emphasizing balance, creativity, and sheer goalscoring prowess.

Starting in goal, Shearer opted for Gordon Banks, the 1966 World Cup winner immortalized by his legendary save against Pelé in 1970. “Tough competition from Peter Shilton and David Seaman,” Shearer noted, but Banks’ heroics edged it. The backline features Phil Neal at right-back, praised for his underrated excellence and four European Cups with Liverpool, despite never shining in a top England side. At left-back, Ashley Cole gets the nod for his blistering pace, defensive solidity, and attacking flair—few forwards ever got past him, according to Shearer. The center-back pairing is a formidable one: Bobby Moore, the eternal captain and World Cup icon, needs no introduction, while Tony Adams earns his spot as the toughest opponent Shearer ever faced—a great leader and defender.

Midfield is a powerhouse of talent. Bryan Robson, “hard as nails” with immense quality, anchors the engine room. Paul Gascoigne, whom Shearer calls the best player he ever shared a pitch with, brings flair and genius. Glenn Hoddle, one of England’s finest passers, could “spray passes for fun,” and Sir Bobby Charlton, a cornerstone of the 1966 triumph, completes the quartet with his unparalleled career.

Up front, Jimmy Greaves partners Shearer himself. Greaves’ astonishing goals-to-games ratio made him irresistible, even if Shearer only saw him on video. As for including himself? Shearer quipped he’d love to play in this team, with chances galore from such creators—though Gary Lineker would be his replacement otherwise. The bench includes Shilton, Lineker, Wayne Rooney, and Peter Beardsley.

This XI reflects Shearer’s deep respect for England’s football heritage, blending grit, skill, and glory. With five Geordies in the mix (including subs), it’s a nod to his Newcastle roots too. Would this team conquer the world? In Shearer’s eyes, absolutely— a testament to the Three Lions’ enduring legacy.
