Former Premier League Referee’s Verdict on Gabriel Handball

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has issued a strong statement on the decision not to award Newcastle a penalty for Gabriel’s handball during their dramatic 2-1 loss to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. The Magpies looked set for another big result in the Premier League, having led at St James’ Park until the 84th minute.

A delicate header from Mikel Merino brought Arsenal level before Gabriel powered in a stoppage-time winner in the 95th minute, capitalising after Nick Pope was left stranded in no man’s land. The result meant Eddie Howe’s side once again suffered defeat in added time, echoing their heartbreak against Liverpool at home back in August.

The match wasn’t without controversy. Viktor Gyokeres was awarded a penalty after being clattered by Pope, only for VAR to overturn the decision – a call widely criticised by professionals. Arsenal’s Gabriel then drew the most ire, first appearing to swing an albow at Nick Woltemade in the first half before clearly stopping a shot in the box with his hand deep into stoppage time. Both incidents went unpunished, leaving Newcastle furious. Watch the incident below:

Halsey, who spent 14 years as a Premier League official after working his way up in the Football League, has cast his verdict on whether a penalty should have been given after Anthony Elanga’s shot was clearly handballed by the Brazilian international. He told The Sun (watch below):

“I thought it was the correct decision, no penalty. It was a blocked tackle, it came back off Elanga and hit Gabriel’s arm, which was in a natural position. When you go to ground, where else can your arm go? Your arm has got to be in the air. And look at the pace of the ball and the close proximity.”

Having added: “I would have been amazed if Gillett would have recommended a review,” it’s clear the 64-year-old felt Simon Hooper’s on-field decision was not as controversial as many rival supporters have suggested.

The victory for Mikel Arteta’s side closed the gap to Liverpool from five points to just two, after the champions suffered a 2-1 defeat away at Crystal Palace earlier in the weekend. With the Gunners set to host West Ham next Saturday afternoon, before Liverpool face Chelsea in the evening, Arsenal could find themselves top of the table – even if only briefly.
